Sitting room help

Looking for some much needed help with decorating my sitting room. At the moment it is horrible and I am so embarrassed by it. I don't have a clue where to start. My plan is to empty everything out and completely start from scratch.

Can anyone help 🙏😪

At risk of going peak MN, would you be able to draw us a floor plan of how it’s laid out now?

Heresoneimadearlier · 28/09/2024 16:15

Sounds an exciting project! I think I would start with the woodburner and decide how I want that to look and work from there as that is the central feature of the room, maybe something like this.

Ok then I’d start with new sofas, what colours do you like? If I was starting again I’d go for a deep olive green or a tan natural hide. But work round the sofa.

With a contrasting love seat

and I would recarpet.

Thank you, those all look lovely. I like natural calming colours. Ideally I don't want a chair. Just the sofa, a big sofa.

What type of sofa, what’s your taste?

Bluebellsinthewind · 28/09/2024 22:06

Something like this would be nice.

Grey is a really hard colour op, and it sucks the light out the room. Thay would be hugely dominating in there,

Silvertulips · 28/09/2024 22:17

I think that sofa is too big - you need to make a start - go and find a cushion or curtains you like - then use those colours for the walls, sofa and hearth.

I do like the room, but it looks cold and uninviting. The walls need warmth and it needs some personality.

Silvertulips · 28/09/2024 22:18

You could build a chimney breast for the fire place.

Georgeous!!

I'll have another proper look at your thread & see if I can add anything useful! 😂😂

Staunchlystarling · 29/09/2024 08:18

Op the other thought I had is how would you decorate round that sofa? I also think it’s too big for your room, and as said will suck the light out.

if you wish something like that. Something like this would be better, In a more neutral colour.

The desk & chair is now gone. I sold them, so that's more space available. I like this sofa

With a black carpet, cream curtains, voile. Black dinning table with cream chairs. Just need to find a ceiling light and a unit for under the tv and something for the walls. I am going to put the TV on the wall.

I thought about building the fire in but, we would lose too much heat from the burner.

Thanks very much everyone for all your fantastic help and ideas.

Don't do what I did and have some feature wallpaper that makes it virtually impossible to find curtains that go with it! I see lots of lovely curtains around, none of which would work with my wallpaper, much as I like it.

Bluebellsinthewind · 29/09/2024 17:49

Aww, sorry to read that. Definitely not getting wallpaper as me and dh can't do that. I've got white paint for the ceiling and Egyptian Cotton for the walls. Need to think of a colour for the wall behind the log burner.

A black carpet might make it very dark.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/09/2024 18:36

What's behind the door? Could you replace it with a glazed door? Then you could get indirect light from the other room.

Staunchlystarling · 29/09/2024 19:03

The sofa is lovely. I’m also not sure about the black carpet though, and the black dining table. I’d keep it all neutral. Will make the place lovely and airy. And expensive looking!

Staunchlystarling · 29/09/2024 19:10

The only comment I’d make on that sofa is you’re better buying from somewhere that scotch guards, I think Dfs,do.

ive two living rooms, one has an expensive Dfs sofa in, I had it scotch guarded, everything just wipes off and it doesn’t stain it’s brilliant. In the smaller one I bought a sofa similar to yours, it looks gorgeous. And I’ve a cream carpet in there, but it marks easily. It is washable ie they come off, but it’s not practical. I’m going to scotch guard it myself, but I’d either buy from somewhere who offers this or do it yourself if it’s your main sofa.

brieandbacon · 29/09/2024 19:13

Black carpet will show all the bits.
