Cost of wood burner and installation

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a wood burner installation and arranging some quotes. I'm just wondering if any one has purchased and had a wood burner installed recently and how much it cost so I can gauge my quotes! I already have a fire place with an old gas fire so no need for a space to b made.
Many Thanks

We have a Charnwood Island wood burner. About £2400, iirc. The installation cost was inexplicably £1300, so my husband fitted it. Our chimney was already lined and there was already a register plate though.

my sister has just had one and i think it cost around £1500 in total

We’ve just bought a new wood burner which was about £1800 without the fitting. All in I think we are looking at about £3k but the old chimney needed some work as well

Eek we just spent 5k but it’s a large burner and we needed plastering and chimney work.

Cotswoldmama · 28/09/2024 13:21

Ours was £1500 for the wood burner and fitting about 2 years ago, the wood burner is quite a small one I think it was £300. We had already prepped the fireplace ready so they just had to line the chimney etc.

£2400 for a mid range log burner with flue, slate hearth and oak mantle.

We looked into it and our fireplace area which had housed a gas fire wasn't big enough so it would have cost a lot to have it altered, we were looking at about £4k to £5k when we were expecting about £2k to £3k

meganna · 28/09/2024 13:36

Approximately 3k for a 5kw stove, polished granite hearth and surround, digging out the existing fireplace hole to enlarge, flue and liner and all fitting.

If you haven't already done so, you should ensure it meets HETAS regulations (a legal requirement) if not it could cause serious issues with carbon monoxide poisoning and also impact any future house sale.

Happens to be my area of expertise! I had it signed off by building control.

We had ours done a few years ago, just before Covid , it was 4k Inc installation as it needs a flue and insulation and notified to building reg. we also used a hetas engineer which is really important. Ours is 11kw , as it’s a large room. The hetas engineer will do the checks for the size you need.

make sure you’ve somewhere to store wood outside.

BurbageBrook · 28/09/2024 14:25

They are terrible for your health. If you wouldn't allow smoking in your home, don't get a wood burner.

Peonies12 · 28/09/2024 14:45

Maybe consider if you want to risk damaging your health, and that of your neighbours. www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/dec/15/pollutionwatch-health-cost-of-burning-wood-to-warm-homes
