Just a question about packing for university.

My child is going to university tomorrow.

We've had everything packed since last weekend (I have autism and adhd) but I'm starting to second guess myself now

How many sets of bedding and towels did you pack? Clothes in general?

We've packed 2 sets of bedding (duvet covers, sheets pillowcases) and two sets of bath towels, hand towels and flannels. There isn't a huge amount fo storage - halls. Someone suggested to me that this was too much and she only needs one set of everything.

I'm just completely overwhelmed by the whole thing now and can't think straight anymore.

You need two sets because what happens when one set is in the wash? We're packing two sets for ds.

Skipsurvey · 28/09/2024 10:32

that sounds perfect,
they will need to wash their bedding.
do they have airers?

That was my thinking.

Yes but not a big one until we have seen the size of the room. Just over the radiator ones.

Thank you.

One on the bed, one in the wash. Dryers are expensive so you can't put straight back on same day.

Yes that's what I thought. I don't want the pressure eof getting it all done in one day. I'd rather full loads were done for cost reasons.

It feels like we've packed so many clothes too!

Everything else, is fine. I think we have everything.

It's so long since I went, I just can't remember. I don't even remember doing any laundry although I must have done! 😅

Anyway, thanks.

Don't worry!
Your kid will do fine.
If he/she needs anything more than packed you will sort it.

If they have washers and dryers then they could get it washed and dried in one day, but more bedding can't hurt. Frankly when I went away to university hardly anyone bothered washing their bedding often, unless they spilt something on it

She washes her bedlinen and towels weekly. She has done since she was quite young.

She's always done it herself. I know it might change when she goes away but that's up to her.

you can order things to be delivered to her once you know more

WonderingWanda · 28/09/2024 10:56

If you get there and she decides she has too much stuff she can always send some back home with you.

Ellerby83 · 28/09/2024 10:58

My ds just had one set of bedding. They wash and dry them and put them straight back on. Having an extra set will take up a lot of storage space. He took 2 towels and a hand towel.

SquigglyNonsense · 28/09/2024 10:58

For DS I packed one set of sheets - and he only ever washed them when I told him to - and one and a half set of towels. I made sure the sheets were v quick drying, and he asked for microfibre quick drying towels after a week of his ordinary ones not drying after a shower.

DD though took 3 sets of bedding, 8 hand towels, 3 floor mats and 3 bath towels. She changes her sheets every week and towels every two seconds at home. I am very much expecting her to change her views on that as time goes on!

Skipsurvey · 28/09/2024 12:20

microfibre towels are an excellent idea

LIZS · 28/09/2024 12:22

If there is very limited space you can always bring excess back but ime copious use of Ikea bags creates extra storage and there may be drawers under the bed.

OP - it’s ALL up to her now. Let her organise herself. She needs to learn to be an adult with all that entails. Let go.

Definitelylivedin · 28/09/2024 12:36

Definitely 2 sets, that way if she spills something (or is sick on her bed) she can change it.

You have just reminded me to send my DD a second sheet as the 2 sets she left with don't fit her bed.

mitogoshigg · 28/09/2024 12:37

Two sets of bedding is perfect, two sets of tableware and cutlery too. Don't forget a clothes airer, dryers are expensive.

Don't overthink clothes too much but dd took basically 2 weeks worth of everyday clothes, 2 sets inside gym wear, 2 sets outdoor sports wear, hiking clothes (sporty outdoorsy type!), short and full length evening dresses plus all relevant footwear. The 2 weeks of underwear is to reduce frequency of needing to pay for washing, they tend to be big machines

Skipsurvey · 28/09/2024 12:52

my dd found they shared machines but the drying was expensive
