Blood sugars goings really low

I'm prediabetic according to the doctors. I'm not sure if it's right because I brought a monitor and my blood sugars are quite low. Before I got the monitor I cut sugar and white carbs out.
Last night I kept going really low whilst I was sleeping. I ate bit it didn't stay up for long.
I had wheetabix this morning with a small sprinkle of sugar and it went up but then spiked and dramatically dropped and I'm back to having low blood sugar again.
What's going on? Can anyone help?

You won't be having hypos from prediabetes. That comes with being on insulin injections.

What does happen is when you cut out sugar and carbs you have about 2 weeks of feeling terrible as your body tries to convince you to eat them again.

MNuser2002 · 28/09/2024 10:17

What were your bgs before you started cutting carbs and sugars? Diabetes is diagnosed by high blood gluclose, not low. Honestly, the best way to get a good idea of what your pancreas is doing, is to check your blood glucose 2 hours after a high carb meal - finger prick is the most accurate.

My bmi states I'm slightly over weight. It also runs in my family so I guess my body is predisposed this way. My A1c was 42 so only just in the prediabetic window.
My readings are all bad now. Even when I eat it goes up a bit but then drops into the red zone. I think it's a dodgy sensor!
I got a monitor aswell because when I cut sugar and white carbs out I was getting extremely dizzy and having awful nightmares which I know now are signs of a hypo so I wanted to make sure I was ok

For god's sake, why don't you stop farting around and wait for proper advice from your GP?
You don't necessarily have a dodgy sensor - you've barely been using CGMs, so you are no expert

I know people are telling you wearing a monitor is overkill, but actually it's a good way to work out which foods (carbs) dont spike your blood sugar, which is what you want to void when you're prediabetic. Potatoes are a big no-no for me, but I can actually tolerate a small amount of rice which was a nice surprise. But your monitor needs to be working properly first.

Snap, had a jacket potato a few weeks ago and sugar went to 19 and didn't get back into normal range for hours. I have discovered air fryer potato peels though which do not spike my sugars. I just save the peelings from when I'm making mash or roasties for the family, season them, a light drizzle of oil and then air fry them till they're crispy.i get my favourite part of the jacket potato, the delicious crispy skin, without the sugar high.

I don't know bgs reading before but my A1c was 42. It had been 38 before that last year. So I can see why they said prediabetic.

With any carb I'm eating the highest its been is about 7

These sound really nice! Thank you for the idea

I brought a finger prick and it said 5.8 my monitor followed that about 10 mins later

Oblomov24 · 28/09/2024 16:30

Good grief. I am T1, and that libre graph shows constantly hypo. 2.9 I am hypo.
At risk of T2 would mean blood sugars are raised.

Oblomov24 · 28/09/2024 16:34

5.8 is within normal, so that's not high either.

MeMyCatsAndI · 28/09/2024 16:38

If prediabetic your numbers would raised not constantly having hypos.

That said CGMs aren't 100 percent, they can be very off or a few points off. You could be lying on it and compressing it causing it say low.

MeMyCatsAndI · 28/09/2024 16:39

Also 5.8 is lovely and healthy if you're not going above 7 you're not pre diabetic and you don't really need a CGM.

Sugaraddict12 · 28/09/2024 16:41

This is what the graph is currently saying. I feel perhaps the doctors have got it wrong maybe? With the CGM and finger prick I haven't been high at all

Do a finger poke now and let me know what it says. I'm type one. I don't think your CGM is accurate.

MissMarplesNiece · 28/09/2024 16:50

My sensor does this if I lie on it in the night. If I do a finger prick to double check my blood glucose would be in the normal range.

If you are prediabetic your blood glucose would be more likely going high, not to lows like this. Even Type 2s who have a v low carb diet don't really go hypo. I'm insulin dependent and would get a hypo of blood glucose below 3 if I'd misjudged/mistimed my insulin dose and taken more than needed for the carbs I'd eaten. At these sort of readings I'd feel it too - shaky, confused, light headed.

If your sensor is working OK during the day when you're up and about I don't think it will be a faulty sensor.

You mentioned up thread that you've changed your diet, can you provide a detailed list of what you've eaten today?

Sodafarl · 28/09/2024 17:03

Another Type 1 diabetic along to say, that's a sure sign of a dodgy sensor (continuous low readings, have had it many times both with the Libre and Dexcom sensors). Stick with the finger prick readings.

Normallynumb · 28/09/2024 18:15

Sorry but I think you've gone overboard buying a cgm when only just in pre diabetic range
I have a finger prick monitor I used to check my glucose 2 hours after a meal
You reading then is normal.. low I would say.
I have a strong family history of T1 and use Bayer contour next.
