Will be in Aldi Sunday week for £14.99. Has anyone got one & is it worth investing? We have rice fairly often. Apparently you can cook other things in it too.

Yes. They are brilliant.

Deadhouseplant · 27/09/2024 16:49

It’s the best bit of kitchen kit I own. Love it!

OtterOnAPlane · 27/09/2024 16:52

I have the Joseph Joseph microwave one, and it's the most used thing in my kitchen.

Depending on what other kitchen gadgets you've got, if you're going to be giving up the worktop/cupboard space, I'd suggest thinking about just spending a little more money and going for a multi-cooker instead. You can get them with rice cooking programmes alongside slow cooking, pressure cooking and all sorts of other gubbins in just one gadget.

I was about to say the same. It is so bloody good .

I wish I had bought my rice cooker years ago. I'm a very good cook, but I hate making rice. Mine does lots of other things so it's very handy.

What else do you do in it?

I steam veg, pot stickers, dumplings, poach eggs, etc. It also has setting for other grains like quinoa.

You had me at poach eggs! Thanks!

Another vote for the J&J microwave one, I'm surprised just how much we use it. I would replace it straight away if I needed to.

coxesorangepippin · 27/09/2024 17:01

If you eat a lot of rice, yes

They're great

Bjorkdidit · 27/09/2024 17:06

We had the Aldi one some years ago. It was good for parties but less so for a couple of portions of rice. It broke after a few years and we didn't replace it.

We now have the Sistema microwave one, which isn't as stylish looking as the Joseph Joseph version but is much cheaper and great for rice and also porridge.

RabbitsRock · 27/09/2024 17:08

Just looked briefly at the Joseph Joseph website - some great stuff! I need to look in depth at their home storage.

I've had a couple over the years, with both of them the rice ended up burned, however I adjusted quantities. I just use a steamer now.

If you don't have a steamer you can buy a cheap steamer insert and cook over a saucepan. You just put rice and water in a stainless bowl, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. It won't burn or overcook this way.

Speaking as someone who could never cook rice!

unpackthat · 27/09/2024 17:26

It's brilliant keeps it warm and I fling stuff in it to make a quasi risotto.

How do you poach eggs in it?

BertieBotts · 27/09/2024 20:02

Yes get one. I have never looked back.

I don't cook other things in it, I think that would be a faff. The only thing I do is mine has a steamer that can go on top of it so sometimes I steam some veg to go with the rice, or we have rice and chicken stock with some froz peas/sweetcorn and cooked chicken in it. Then you can use that to make egg fried rice really easily.

Kpo58 · 27/09/2024 20:17

My DH bought one a month or so ago and it was the best thing ever. It's not been used in a few weeks though. 🤔

Psychologymam · 27/09/2024 20:18

Love mine - it’s so old and just does rice but I never cook rice any other way now - it’s so easy!

SquigglePigs · 27/09/2024 20:31

I was really dubious but I love ours.

Starlightstarbright3 · 27/09/2024 20:35

I have an Asda one … I love it only cook rice in it .. however I love it put the rice in leave it to cook

CurlewKate · 27/09/2024 20:38

@OtterOnAPlane "I have the Joseph Joseph microwave one, and it's the most used thing in my kitchen."

Me too!

ZiggyZowie · 27/09/2024 20:40

Do you really think it's worth buying.

My rice turns out either hard or soggy.

I end up buying fried rice or pilau rice to microwave

teuio · 27/09/2024 20:44

Mine is my most prized possession 😂 i have a zojirushi which is over priced but I got it years ago and it gets used pretty much everyday

I really hate microwave rice .. it tastes strange.

I sometimes chuck some rice in if we have a takeaway .. it cuts the cost down

Doggymummar · 27/09/2024 20:45

My oh loves his rice cooker. Uses it several times a week
