Gemma Collins - Why Do You Think You Are?

I watched this expecting to turn it off after 10 minutes as I am usually so irritated by her.
Actually watched the whole thing and found her quite likeable at times. She was irritating but in an oddly endearing, genuine, way. She was gloriously awful but at the same time has a bit of nous about her, didn't mind being make-up free on camera for most of the programme, was incredibly badly dressed, could talk to anyone at all and get on with them. She was totally unsnobbish and it was an interesting, sad, story of women being judged and treated badly by men and society and tough lives.
Anyone else watch it?
Along with Olly Murs last week, it is the best of the last series which have been increasingly dull.

Do people not realise that the 'GC' is a character she plays for the telly? Actual Gemma Collins will be quite different.

Regarding the comments that some celebs' family stories are too boring, do you mean that literally or is it that there are no records beyond birth certificates and census records to expand upon and illustrate their stories? I'm not a regular viewer but they seem to feature other documents, eg newspaper articles, army records etc. So the ancestors weren't necessarily boring in themselves but there weren't any other records or documents that revealed stories about them?

You can build a story around something to do with an aspect of their life. For example there was a whole exploration of mental health with the Gemma Collins one with an absence of exact information.

If you family were all miners from Barnsley and they've already covered that, there's ultimately a limit to where you can go with that though.

Same for loads of ag labs which I've come across looking at a friend's tree. Another all came from the same county doing the same thing and have been there for the last 200 years. Which I found interesting to a point as it explains a lot but it's not enough to make an hour long programme.

What I also find interesting is they now clearly ask the family for what they already know - and a lot of the research looks to have been done to a certain extent by family members - and it's only after that they look further to expand on that.

If they ever looked at DSs family history (should he become famous - not that I want him to!) they'd be firmly spoilt for choice of stories!

Yes, I enjoyed it more than expected. She seemed down to earth and quite sweet. Was not convinced by her beret at the end.

The best ones I can recall are Judi Dench, Kevin Clifton, Matt Lucas and Josh Widdecombe. I'm sure there are some great older ones I've forgotten about as well.

I also loved Josh Widecombe and Kevin Clifton. I liked the Danny D one, but it felt a bit staged. There was an article shortly after the ep that said almost anyone in the UK can eventually trace their heritage back to Edward III. Grin

It seems that people are happy to believe that what they see on tv is what people are in real life… and of course Gema doesn’t need her “brand” to sell, so why would she (or anyone else making a living or being famous) pretend to be someone she is not?

deeahgwitch · 01/10/2024 13:39

What was the unusual name of her great great great ? grandmother?
I was surprised she didn't enquire about the unusual name.
She decided she was a real heroine.

What a sad early life for Gemma's Mum. No child should have to endure that. I'm glad GC connected with her Mum's cousin and her daughters.

Poor old Michael Parkinson.
They asked him to be on wdytya and after some research told him his ancestry wasn’t interesting enough to make a tv programme.
I think his whole past was in Barnsley.

😂Sorry that did make me laugh

Singleandproud · 01/10/2024 14:12

@deeahgwitch the name was Thirza.

deeahgwitch · 01/10/2024 17:20

Yes ! Thank you @Singleandproud 💐

Pyjamatimenow · 01/10/2024 22:37

Just watching it. I think she’s great. So lovely seeing her with cousins

Nothing will ever top Josh Widdecombe for me. I watch it at least once every 3 months. The ultimate Nepo baby 😂

I have watched it twice as well. He was so amazed! Loved his and Judi Dench.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/10/2024 22:54

I thought Vicki McClure’s one was very good this season.

Well, if Gemma Collins is really a hyper-intelligent, well-informed, reserved individual, articulate and thoughtful, then she’s clearly also an astonishing actor.

Well, if Gemma Collins is really a hyper-intelligent, well-informed, reserved individual, articulate and thoughtful, then she’s clearly also an astonishing actor.

I don't know if she's 'hyper' intelligent (whatever that is!) but she is an outdoorsy, country-loving peaceful soul who is opposite from her TV persona. I don't know what age she is but she's made a stack of cash and done very well for herself money-wise.
I think (and i know she will have an agent plotting her every move) she has been strategic in courting the media to best effect.

Obvs, she does have her weight issues and i should think she has some emotional issues underlying that. But then again, she knows that image keeps paying the bills so I wouldn't be at all surprised if she yo yos her weight for the press.

She's not 'thick' That's for sure. Whether she is intelligent in that high brow, educated way you're probably thinking of, i don't know.

But she's certainly emotionally intelligent to make a whole living from her personality. People (enough people) like her. She has created a persona that makes money.

And she hasn't really put a foot wrong with that. So far!

Pyjamatimenow · 02/10/2024 08:58

@Anisty agree. I think she’s smart where she needs to be. She also looked genuinely fascinated when speaking with all the experts. I also thought they genuinely looked like they were enjoying themselves speaking with her in a way you don’t normally notice on these programmes. She clearly has a lot going for her.

pictoosh · 02/10/2024 09:12

Can't give credit to anyone who makes money from being thoroughly obnoxious.
I have zero respect for the Gemma Collinses of this world.

LushLemonTart · 02/10/2024 10:18

@pictoosh wasn't that a character though? Not that I've ever watched. She came across nice on DOI

pictoosh · 02/10/2024 11:16

Character or not, she promotes a bullying, shallow, self-obsessed culture.
Get in the sea. And all her mates.
Last thing we need.

LushLemonTart · 02/10/2024 11:31

Oh didn't know she'd bullied anyone.

LushLemonTart · 02/10/2024 11:32

I googled Gemma Collins bullying only got her being bullied?

The Danny Dyer episode was mesmerising but seemed in a different style to all the other episodes. Tbf Dyer comes across in everything as a cartoon character. I have a ludicrous fantasy that he actually speaks like Eddie Redmayne or Alexander Armstrong and his whole persona is a very elaborate post modern joke

Theres a whole lot more to DD than meets the eye. His early theatrical history is fascinating.
I think we’ll see a lot more of him in a different guise as he ages and moves on from the hard nut persona.
I think he’ll go back to his serious theatrical roots.

ChungKing · 02/10/2024 11:43

SwedishEdith · 26/09/2024 23:52

Oh, I know he'd never do it. But I think he'd be another Olivia Coleman or the other guy whose name completely escapes me now who discovered they had Indian heritage. Just interesting.

I always thought he knew he had Indian heritage but chooses to deny it for whatever reason. Have I completely got that wrong?

Pyjamatimenow · 02/10/2024 12:18

Yes I would like to know about the bullying? I know some of the comments about her appearance on social media are hideous. The tattle threads on her are brutal. I think she’s very brave

I saw a clip of him doing Hamlet when he was young. Totally different to East End Danny Dyer!

He was mentored by Mark Rylance wasnt he?
