Are all secondaries like this

I moved to work in the pastoral team in a large secondary at the beginning of this year. I can honestly say I have never had a job like this. I do generally get to work with the difficult kids so I get to see the worst. My days are utterly full on. I get no lunch or break. I'm lucky to get to the loo. It's constant and the level of need from the student's and their families is very high. It feels like nothing is ever done properly because everything is so reactive.

The school itself also looks shabby despite being painted over the summer. It floods in parts in heavy rain, including my office which now stinks and everything is damp. There's no money to change things to make it better and nothing looks well kept.

I am also a school governor at a different large secondary and the feel there is different. I know the school is telling Governors what they want them to hear but there does seem to be more process. I just wondered if actually all schools are like my workplace or is it just a result of historical poor management?

Pretty standard due to massive cuts inflicted for years. No support for kids or staff, everything cut to the bone, buildings in need of repair, no money for equipment. Thank the tories austerity for this.

I’ve been visiting secondary schools this month, and at two the deputy heads said during conversation between tours that the schools are underfunded and letting the children down. Didn’t get a chance to speak privately at the others, but seems to be the same from what I’m hearing from other parents. It’s incredibly depressing. Not all secondaries I’m sure, but seems to be a lot. A lot of over worked and demoralised staff members too. I’m actually really worried.

Pretty standard from what I've seen. The schools that are managing better seem to be those that are running as businesses and excluding all the kids with SEN.

How utterly depressing. We are failing so many kids. Staffing is a huge problem at ours. We have a lot of sick leave and issues with retention. There doesn't feel like enough adults to kids.

Yes pretty standard.
The pastoral care needs are so huge now that teaching plays second fiddle. Schools are having to provide more services than ever with less money.

Our young people deserve better.
