Is this an expensive holiday?

My aunt and uncle are trying to organise a family get together in a hotel in France next summer. We’ve got a big family so would be a great chance to get together. They said they had a good deal on the hotel for a week… £3k per room. For a week. Does include food. Obviously flights on top.

now this is totally totally out of the budget for dh and me. Three dc with nursery fees etc. we’re comfortable but not lots of spare cash at the moment. I think my family are really disappointed and I feel very embarrassed. But am I not right that this is a very expensive holiday?

What does ‘per room’ mean ie does it include your 3 DC?

How many nights?

angstypant · 26/09/2024 20:14

£3k for a week including food in high season for a family of 5? It's a fairly normal price I would think. Nit cheap. Not over the top. In the average range.

mindutopia · 26/09/2024 20:17

Yes, that’s bonkers. We went to Spain earlier this year and stayed in a lovely flat right near the beach, didn’t include meals (but who wants to eat hotel food 3 meals a day for a week?!) but was £80 a night. 3 bedrooms, air con, a patio and a balcony. It was lovely. I never understand how people bleed so much money on holidays.

lightsandtunnels · 26/09/2024 20:18

Sounds quite a lot for Europe but depends on the luxury of the hotel, standard of food, facilities, location etc. Also per room is a bit confusing - is that per room for 2 adults or 2 adults and 4 children all the same price?

You could do it cheaper but if it's AI then seems fairly average I think.

Per room though. Could be over 10K with flights.

HappierTimesAhead · 26/09/2024 20:28

I think £3000 for a week all inclusive (so flights and transfers) would be expected but not just the hotel. Surely you could all rent a big villa and get a chef in for this price?

Scousefab1 · 28/09/2024 07:53

I was going to say maybe try some cheaper accomodation near where they are staying that way you can still join them but at a cheaper price.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/09/2024 08:01

All inclusive in France seems a bit of an odd choice, even small towns have good value restaurants and cafes.

Where in France? Ir's a big country and some areas are a lot more expensive than others.

PollyOrange · 28/09/2024 08:02

@mindutopia would you mind sharing which resort please and if it was Airbnb ? Thank you!

greengreyblue · 28/09/2024 08:03

V expensive without flights.

mitogoshigg · 28/09/2024 08:05

Depends on the hotel and what it includes. If school holidays and ai that's cheap, if b&b not so much. I typically pay £100 a night in France b&b but that's a hotel like an ibis, no facilities and not in school holidays.

ifonly4 · 28/09/2024 08:06

If that's a room for all your family, then probably OK. If you're going to need two rooms, then very expensive. Nice not to worry too much about food, but I'd have chosen a large chateau which might have been a better price and each family taken it in turns to cater.

Headingtowardsdivorce · 28/09/2024 08:06

I think it's expensive.

Beautifulsunflowers · 28/09/2024 08:06

Yes it’s expensive but you could do it cheaper.
Easyjet were advertising 20% off flights this week.
you could book an Airbnb nearby and self cater. Then meet up with the family during the day or for dinner.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 28/09/2024 08:07

"Per room though. Could be over 10K with flights."

I don't think flights to France will be over £7k 🤣

OP this totally depends on the hotel, what other facilities, what you mean by "per room, with food" etc.

Ultimately, if you can't afford it then you can't afford it. If you're on a budget why are you leaving it to other people to find your accommodation? Search for a eurocamp or similar nearby and meet up with them a few times over the week.

curious79 · 28/09/2024 08:08

For France that’s expensive. We hired an 8 room chateau this past summer - shabby chic but absolutely gorgeous - in France, dordogne, for £5k.

if it’s directly on the beach, in a smart area of Corsica or south of France then the price is right

fridaynight1 · 28/09/2024 08:10

Depends on how many rooms you need. And how much the flights cost.
3k for 5 people for a week in high season in a nice hotel sounds good.
But no so good if you need 3 rooms and the flights are 1k each.

permanently · 28/09/2024 08:10

When I was at your age and stage OP there is no way we could have afforded that. Have you priced up the flights/guestimated food and drinks? Divided it by 12 and told your parents this is what it will cost us each month?

OrdsallChord · 28/09/2024 08:13

What matters is whether you can afford it, surely? Something can be a good deal and still too expensive.

On the info given, it's possible it's a good deal. But hard to say. Can you all share one room? Car hire? When you say food included, is that all inclusive or something else? It can be drinks and ice creams that are the killer, especially with little ones who might not even eat that much in the heat anyway. It tends to be older kids who eat like adults but still pay child prices that benefit from all inclusive. I didn't think all inclusive was much of a thing in France though.

WiserOlderElf · 28/09/2024 08:14

If you can’t afford it you can’t afford it, whatever it costs.

arethereanyleftatall · 28/09/2024 08:14

@mindutopia
Depends on the food. If you go to a high end one with lovely food, then all included food is lush. I've only been on a super posh one once but there was all the lovely food you could imagine. I spent a lot of time at the freshly made sushi bar.

theentireroom · 28/09/2024 08:31

It depends on the food, drink, standard of the hotel. But it’s an average price so guessing average hotel.

If you can’t afford it then definitely don’t go. It’s still a lot of money.

Trixiefirecracker · 28/09/2024 08:42

I think that’s extortionate. Even with food. We hired air b and b for a week, was charming and very well equipped. Cost £500. Flights were under £70 each.

TemuSpecialBuy · 28/09/2024 08:49

1.5k -2k per week per adult is our top end budget.
we have a high hh income

this is not cheap or a good deal.
its expensive.

we make over 250k gross per annum and we would def not pay more than this for France….
in fact I’m not sure I’d even pay this for a week in France.

Cloverforever · 28/09/2024 08:51

Ridiculous price if they want everybody to come.
