Worth reporting this driver?

A large white van near my home just reversed straight out of a parking area and over the pavement where I was walking. He clipped my shoulder but I managed to step back out of the way. I’m not injured but dd walks there all the time and I think this guy is there quite regularly. I knocked on his window and shouted at him that he just nearly mowed me down but he just ignored. Is it worth reporting to 101? No witnesses

not worth it
will just waste their time i’m afraid

Paisleydad · 26/09/2024 14:23

Yes report. You don't know if other concerns have been raised - it's possible he's already on the radar. He was at least driving without care and attention if he has hit you.

I’m actually wondering if I can report anyway for the way they regularly park. It’s a commercial building with a small parking area outside of it but the cans that park there over hang the parking area and it means that there’s barely anywhere for pedestrians to walk. Sometimes you have to walk in the road because they’re so far out. I’m not a driver so I’m not completely sure of the rules

private land so contact the commercial building

I think the driver might actually be the owner of the building

Given that he actually made contact with you with the van, yes I would report it.

how have you concluded that from this one exchange?

As well. OP was on the (presumably public) pavement.

Yes of course you should report it. Imagine if it had been a toddler instead of you!

Agree

It could help build a picture/case for the police if there's other things going on

People who behave like this, it's usually part of a pattern of behaviour

TwigTheWonderKid · 26/09/2024 14:34

And the fact he ignored you makes it even worse.

I’ve seen him before going in and out. It’s like a building with a workshop on the ground floor.

Note on windscreen

Please be more careful reversing on to the public highway. I will report to the police if you continue to be so careless when reversing out

I’m concerned about my own kids. They’re at an age now where they are walking to school/ shops. They have to walk by there and it could easily be one of them he hit

I'd hope you would be as concerned about the danger to any children, not just your own. I don't really understand why would you hesitate to report a dangerous driver?

WetBandits · 26/09/2024 14:47

I would report him without a doubt. If he’d hit you at a different angle, or hit a child or someone less steady on their feet, he could have killed someone.

RightSedFred · 26/09/2024 14:49

Yes, you need to report him to the police. You've been the victim of a hit-and-run.

Obviously also other people’s as well! I’m
only hesitating because as a non driver I don’t know much about driver responsibility. I will report him though. I didn’t get his reg. I’m waiting for him to come back and I’ll get it and report

OP posts:
TwigTheWonderKid · 26/09/2024 15:21

So he has total responsibility unless you literally hurled yourself in front of the van.

The 2022 changes in hierarchy to the highway code mean that pedestrians should have the most protection and vehicle drivers have increasing levels of responsibility depending on the size and weight of their vehicles. So he should be protecting you , not almost running you over and failing to admit responsibility.

Plus ideally he should be reversing into the parking space so he can see properly when he pulls out. Although that's just common sense rather than a rule.
