Car insurance Daughter - is this legal?

confusedabouthormones · 26/09/2024 09:40

Daughter has passed test and needs insurance for a car she has bought. Quotes for her as proposer are at least £2000.
However if uninsured myself as main driver and her as named driver it comes out at £600!

Is this legal? FYI I own and have insurance for my own car.

Thanks x

It's only legal if you are the main driver of the car. Otherwise it's insurance fraud known as fronting.

Theseventhmagpie · 26/09/2024 09:43

No. If your daughter is going to be the main driver that is what needs to be covered in the policy. What you are proposing is insurance fraud. It’s very common but has potentially disastrous consequences if discovered ( think policy cancelled and no cover for a serious accident).

SpookyX · 26/09/2024 09:48

No, it's illegal and called fronting.

Insurance policies are very hot on this and always on the look out for it, and your insurance would be invalidated if a claim was to be made.

If your daughter adds you as a named driver on her policy that may reduce the cost? My DS did this, adding his partner as a named driver when he insured his first car. (His partner does occasionally drive DS car when sharing driving on long journeys).

Ahh. Thank you. It did seem too good to be true in fairness. Ok. Seems we will just have to shut up and put up. Thanks x

OP,
My son's insurance was coming up with a ridiculous price too, but by adding myself & his dad as named drivers(we're obviously alot older with many years driving experience) the price came down considerably.
Might be worth looking in to?

ImNotYourMonstera · 26/09/2024 10:03

Insurers will be able to see the fraudulent quote and may ask for copy of V5 and query who the main user is even if your daughter takes out a policy in her own name.

Did you do the quote on 0 NCB? Since yours is in use on your own car.

I would read the whole thread. What you have done is most likely fraud if the insured car isn't your or your husband's main car.

Adding parents to a child's policy as named drivers isn't fraud and very commonly advised. Claiming to be the main driver when you're not definitely is. https://parkinsurance.co.uk/young-drivers-insurance-legal-parents-added-named-drivers-childrens-policies/

I'm 45 with 15 years of no claims and still add my parents to my car insurance as it brings down the price!

It really isn't! You can add anyone as a named driver to your insurance, this ensures they are fully insured if they ever drive your vehicle.

Insurance broker here.
Adding a parent to a child's policy is not illegal and can help bring down the premium.
However, the child should still be listed as the main driver/user, otherwise that is fraud as you are misrepresenting the risk.

Please educate yourself and read the above comments, particularly the one from the Insurance Broker.
We haven't committed fraud. My son is the policy holder and he has added myself & his dad as named drivers (as we do drive his car from time to time).
This is a perfectly legal thing to do.

Absolutely correct!
The vehicle should always be insured in the name of the registered owner/keeper - this is one of the most basic principles of insurance, the Principle of Insurable Interest.
In it's simplest terms, you cannot insure something that does not belong to you.
Where a car is leased, it should be insured in the name of the person to whom the car has been leased and whose name is on the leasing agreement. The interest of the leasing company should be declared though, and some insurers might note this elsewhere on the policy.
For example, with our own car, my husband is the registered owner/keeper so our policy is in his name, with me listed as an additional named driver.
HOWEVER, I am noted as the main driver because I use it much more often than he does, as he has a company vehicle.

Oneblindmouse · 26/09/2024 15:29

As well as adding his driving experienced partner as a named driver my DS had a "black box" monitor installed and that reduced his premium further.
