Desperate, urgent, sos: Comfortable waterproof trousers for kids

Ds (3) has just joined a new pre school and was going really happily there every day for the first 2 weeks. They do a lot of outdoor learning and play, which theoretically I think is absolutely brilliant. However now, they insist that the kids wear waterproof trousers on top of their other clothes (I.e joggers or leggings). Ds absolutely hates them and it takes me me 10-15min every morning (and a lot of tears, screaming and hitting) to get him to put them on. He has to sit with them through breakfast before they go out, which I can imagine isn't very comfortable.

Can anyone recommend a very, VERY comfortable pair of water proof trousers, please? Alternatively, Is there anything that is not meant to be worn on top of your clothes, e.g. some sort or water proof joggers but again very comfortable? Actually a pair of soft joggers thst are somehow miraculously waterproof would be ideal!!

Thank you!!!

Have you had a look on blacks? That's where I get all my kids waterproofs from for snowboarding and they have quite a big selection. What about a pair of waterproof dungarees instead? The waistband of over trousers can be quite tight and annoying so maybe that's irritating him, obviously won't have that issue with dungarees though, they have some on blacks

My youngest went to outdoor nursery and had to wear waterproof trousers all day every day (unless there was a heatwave). We got some fleece lined dungarees -style ones from Lidl for over winter, they were very soft inside.

Could you get him kids ski trousers? Warm enough that he doesn't need anything (except pants) underneath?

Mydustymonstera · 26/09/2024 14:07

God that sounds like a nightmare. What kind are you trying? If it’s the thin packable ones, what about the thicker ones that come either with fleece lining or unlined?
does he have an older cousin or friend that could share a couple of pairs to try?
lidl do great ones but you have to jump on it when they are in stock. Muddy puddles or spotty otter are ££ but used by all the forest schools.

the thicker ones are less noisy, if that seems to be the problem. The fleece ones he might not have to wear something underneath unless it’s v cold??

Yes, he doesn't like the waistband but they said strictly trousers only as with dungaree types the kids might struggle to make it to rhe toilet on time.

Frugi are very good. Look on vinted. Or dricksons I can't remember the exact name but they are fairly pricey but recommended by forest schools round here

Merrow · 26/09/2024 15:20

DS1 had frugi waterproof fleece lined trousers so only had to wear them rather than multiple layers.

I've got one pair from aldi or lidl which is fleece lined and one pair from mountain warehouse. He prefers the lidl one but still hates them both.

I'll ask if he can just wear them all day long without any joggers underneath but I doubt it because they said they often remove them by 3pm and definitely before the after school club that he attends in the evening.

Lidl and Aldi often have them and their material is thicker and less rustly than the more walking type ones. Probably also better for sitting on wet ground. Each year's will be different though.

Can also look at their ski trousers but they will likely be too warm for indoors.

There might be soft shell type trousers in eg Decathlon but these usually kick in older than nursery age. Again they're not really sitting in a muddy puddle proof.

Would he wear say cycling shorts underneath for less bulk? Or thin leggings so you don't get over trousers waist on top of joggers bulky waist?

Yes I've seen some soft shell ones but not for his age. He w9nt have to sit in a muddy puddle but just one wet grass or ground.

Maybe I'll try leggings. Thanks.

And they can't be too warm either because he has to wear them indoors as well.

Get a puddlesuit, no waistband so very comfy, not wildly expensive.

He has a puddle suit that he loves. They said no puddlesuits are allowed as it makes going to the toilet more difficult (which is true).😥

If they're going out of their way to be that obstructive to every solution, I'd say they need to put him in them before they take him outside - it's unreasonable of them to expect him to sit in waterproofs to eat breakfast! It's like us keeping our coats on at our desks at work!!

Surely a puddle suit they help him in and out of is easiest,

WaterBuffalo · 26/09/2024 15:36

The frugi ones are expensive 😮. I'd need a few of them as he goes 5 days a week (and sometimes has toilet accidents. He's just turned 3).

They said they can't put waterproof trousers on all 50 kids. Well, actually there are only about 10 kids in the breakfast club but anyway when I asked if he could wear them there they said no.

Hang on, they want him in waterproofs for the morning, but he can't wear them to breakfast club?? I'd be saying it's on them to put him in them then! Sounds like a daft rule to me

There's some "Jan and Jul" ones on Amazon that look like they'd be comfortable? They're pricey then

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 26/09/2024 15:43

My son didn't like waterproofed trousers but waders were a game changer!

FactyFrances · 26/09/2024 19:21

These are really nice, fleece lined, adjustable straps, can be worn with or without trousers underneath. My toddler still makes a fuss about putting them on but then plays happily so I presume they're comfortable: Playshoes Waterproof Rain... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00ZX6WNYW?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

If its the waist band being an issue, id attempt a pair of cheap snowboarding trousers instead. They don't usually have the tight elasticated band that over trousers have, and they will be great for warmth 🙂

Muddy Puddles?
