Pachinko novel vs series

I'd love to hear from anyone who read the amazing novel and then watched the series on apple. I loved the novel and don't want it tainted by a poorly done adaptation. How did you find the tv series?

The book blew me away and I was like you and not expecting much from the series. But, in truth, I am equally blown away with it. I am on season 2 and hate when the episode finishes and I have to wait til next Friday for the next one. DH didn't read the book but is equally enthralled.

The characters, the actors, the scenery and the cinematography - all amazing. And the opening credits make me smile so much. There is also an extra back story episode of one of the main characters which I really enjoyed.

I read the book and absolutely loved it - I did enjoy the series but I don’t think I have ever watched a series that is as good as the book, possibly because I no longer “control” the image I have created in my head or the pace. I think it was enjoyable, I am glad I watched it but, no, it’s never the same. Probably no help at all but if you do watch it, let me know what you think!

Oh sorry, in my excitment I read it that you hadn't watched the series yet.

What did you think?

Doh, re-read the post again. Ignore me 😅

That gave me a giggle@Breathmiller !

We tried the 1st ep today, it's what led to my post. My DH hasn't read the book so he was coming to it cold. The opening credits did make me smile, also as soon as I saw Sanjo's dad I smiled, but DH wanted the dubbed rather than subtitled version, and I thought it was jarring and lacked the grace of the actor's voices, and he wasn't feeling it so I stopped it to potentially watch on my own later. I wasn't gripped by the few minutes we watched though, so I thought I'd check out others opinions. It gets a crazy high rotten tomatoes rating. I'll try again on my own with ordinary subtitles! But I can be like you @LAvortonDeLaLitière and struggle a bit when the screen differs from my mind's eye too!

Yes, I watched it with subtitles, I never like dubbed films. It always feels strange.

I'd be interested in hearing how you get on if you try again.

I do hear you both on films not matching up with what is in your mind but I try to think of it as something new in its own right. And I fell in love with the film's interpretations of the characters as well as my own when I read the book.
