(Teacher) nicer school to be fair. I’ve responsibility (unpaid). Head of Dept isn’t great. Basically I’ve walked into a shit show (too tired to write more eloquently)

problem is .. I live in a rural area. This job pays well 10 mins from my home. How do you get yourself to switch off in the evenings and grow elephant skin to not care 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹

A 10 minute commute is worth keeping, and it's still the beginning of the academic year so I'd probably have a glass of wine and wait for it all to become routine.

Yeah it might fall into place. I’m in a very tough part of the school (don’t want to out myself) but the young students are lovely, just lack of physical resources and Human Resources. I will try and tough it out, thanks for listening to me 💐

Make sure you're in a union.

Royalshyness · 25/09/2024 07:06

I might actually contact my union today

Tbf I think teaching is a shit show wherever you are at the moment-ridiculous expectations, no people and no budget. I don’t know many teachers who aren’t plotting at exit strategy :(

It might be that it’s a terrible job/ place to work, but might also be the settling in and finding your feet phase. Try and stick it out for a bit and don’t make big decisions until you’re feeling calm and logical.
I tend to like workplaces better when I’ve met one or two people (colleagues, not children) genuinely like, so that I’m happy to see them and feel I have someone to turn to. Sometimes this takes a while.
Are there any bits you like? You say the YP are great. That’s a bonus.
And the ten minute commute (I have this) is worth its weight in gold so long as you don’t make up the time with extra work.

If you like the school generally then I would hang fire until after Christmas to give you time to settle in. A HOD isn't necessarily there forever. I had a number of them over my teaching career and only two that were decent.

Thank you. I am in the school two months in this job but I did another role last year in the school. I find the school ok in that I like the students (rural and good natured) but the role I am in is collaborative and other teachers are set in the dark ages. Headteacher is good but naive to the issues (I am at risk of getting hurt as I am in a tough part of the school - don’t want to out myself but you probably can guess)

up until now school was fee paying, grammar - now comprehensive public & the culture shift isn’t happening 🥹
