If you had to rank England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in order of how well-known those countries are outside the U.K., how would you rank them and why?

OP posts:

First Wales - obviously
Then joint second all the other three.

TickingAlongNicely · 25/09/2024 00:20

England
Scotland
Wales
Northern Ireland... simply because people might confuse it with the Republic of Ireland.

MrsBobtonTrent · 25/09/2024 00:25

England (because that’s what we called the whole thing)
Northern Ireland (there was a pitiful attempt at an Irish pub in a nearby city and I remember learning about the Troubles (somewhat inaccurately!) at school)
Scotland (I’d vaguely heard of it as a region of England)
Wales (never heard of it until I moved to England).

I'd say that Wales is least known outside of the UK

Humour faiil. 😁

wickerlady · 25/09/2024 06:38

England
Wales
NI
Scotland

wickerlady · 25/09/2024 06:39

I don't know why BTW! It's probably way off in reality

DreamW3aver · 25/09/2024 06:47

How can you answer that, it's not like the whole of the rest of the world has one universal knowledge. What's the story behind the question?

Uh, people in these islands confuse NI with Ireland on a regular basis. Not to mind the rest of the world.

Years ago, I was in the USA and heard a radio news item about a scientific breakthrough that had taken place at "the University of Cardiff, Wales, England" 😂

RoachFish · 25/09/2024 07:57

Not British person here and this is how I look at it:

England (obviously first)
Scotland (famous for whisky, bagpipes, kilts and movies etc)
Wales (known for Tom Jones possibly)
NI (less obvious part of UK due to its name and nothing or nobody specific comes to mind when I think of it)

KnickerlessParsons · 26/09/2024 17:18

Tom Jones? Is that it? Can you really not think of anything else to say about Wales? 😮

I saw a program on Polish TV where they had callers in and one guy was shown as coming from 'Edinburgh, England'!

121Diet · 26/09/2024 17:21

England

How about The Troubles? I would have thought most people would have heard of those…maybe people born after the GFA was signed don’t know much about it.

worcesterpear · 26/09/2024 17:25

England
Scotland
Wales
Northern Ireland (only because of the confusion with Ireland as a whole)

Otherwise it might be
Ireland
England
Scotland
Wales

It's an off the cuff comment not a GCSE essay! 🤣

RandomUsernameHere · 26/09/2024 17:48

England because the capital city is there, then Scotland because many people outside the UK are more interested in aspects of Scottish culture, then Wales and NI last because the relationship between it and the RoI is confusing and people are often unclear about which is part of the UK.

And that was a jokey remark, not a formal complaint.

Phew. Sometimes Mumsnet really should be done round the table with a glass of wine or something.
Ah well.
