How do I temporarily cover a glass door?

Having a relative come to stay and will make up a bed in the living room. Only problem is the door is glass. Has anyone got a solution for this that doesn’t ruin the door but still gives privacy?

I was just imagining I would hate to be in there even at night thinking someone might come dow and be able to see me… want to make it as comfy as possible.

We used one of those stick on suction cup black out blinds when faced with same problem

I have a glass panelled door that I used to have a beautiful piece of Indian fabric attached with drawing pins to make it private.

Bubble wrap (buy rolls from Tesco). Cut to size, damp/spray the back with water and it will stick on by itself. Can also be used to insulate windows.

Travel blackout blind.

At Christmas when we want to hide the presents from the kids we hang a table cloth over the door and catch it at the top when it shuts. Easy!

When I WFH in the front room, I hang a single fitted sheet over the door so it drapes on both sides of the glass panel. It's thin enough the door opens and closes easily and light can still pass through a bit, but you can't see I'm in there when the kids are running past.

You can just used card & double sided tape. Depends how much energy, money, time, supplies you have.

if it's any help, the glass wouldn't bother me one bit. I stay at friends, on the sofa, they have frosted doors but I leave them wide open or it gets far too hot !! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I can't imagine caring if my family/friends see me (gasp) sleeping.

I was thinking more of changing, waking up etc when the kids are waking up and walking past in the morning. Maybe I’m overthinking! Just want it to feel private.

thanks all! Great solutions.

You can buy paper concertina blinds on Amazon. Cut to fit glass and stick down with blu tac.

Notonthestairs · 24/09/2024 21:57

This sort of thing.

IKEA stick on blinds fab for this we used them at Christmas

DontBother123 · 24/09/2024 21:59

Window film from Amazon. It’s cheap and you can get some lovely ones that look like stained glass.

Walkacrossthesand · 24/09/2024 22:10

Just coming on to say what @DontBother123 said - window film from Amazon, lovely colours & patterns available. Choose carefully as they're not all opaque - some have a pattern on a frosted glass type background - but I got a stained glass pattern and it's gorgeous. I leave mine on all the time as I'm not sure I'd get it back on if I took it off, but I don't mind as it's a lovely splash of colour.

Silvertulips · 24/09/2024 22:14

You can get glass spray I used leaves to add pattern to the glass.

you can also get stick on mirrors - one way cover that would work aswell.

Bramshott · 24/09/2024 22:15

Newspaper and blutack

Sandbag11 · 24/09/2024 22:16

Spray glas with water, stick aluminium foil to it
sticks for ages , used to do this as temporary black out blinds alternative in the past

This might be my favourite ever thread ... 15 creative solutions in under an hour and mostly cheap, easy and completely practical. Love it!

WonderingWanda · 24/09/2024 22:24

Get those over the door hooks and hang a shower curtain on it. Then you can unhook it during the day.

The kids are teens now, so never up before me 😂😂😂😂

but when they were younger used to just come in & want to cuddle/read/play/watch tv etc

quite happy with that & miss those days!!

deplorabelle · 24/09/2024 22:28

We use wrapping paper and sellotape. Often the cheapest source of large paper

SeriouslyStressed · 24/09/2024 22:35

Silver foil and water. Wipe a damp cloth over the glass and the aluminium foil will stick to it

Nourishinghandcream · 24/09/2024 22:43

Windowlene cream.
Wipe it over the glass, let it dry and it is completely opaque. Just polish it off when no-longer needed.

It is very old school and was used for this very purpose decades ago. Shops would use it when refitting or restocking, people would put it on their house windows when redecorating and the curtains had been taken down.
No idea why it went out of fashion and people started sticking things to the glass?
