Collagen supplements

Howdy mumsnetters! Can anyone talk me through the benefits/non benefits of taking collagen please?

Also any recommendations for brands/where to buy?

I've been trying to do my own research and getting sucked into an internet black hole of promoted products when I'm not even sure what I want/need.

Would recommend any words of experience

Hi there
I'm afraid I'm none the wiser but have exactly the same issue- there's SO many products, which ones actually work etc!

I'm wondering if you might get more responses in the Style & Beaty section?

I’m afraid I’m also here to see what the wise ones suggest. I have about 57 tabs open on This and none the wiser…

Sorry folks, once your collogen is gone, it's gone.
Otherwise chronic wounds would heal beautfully around a bouncy collagen matrix.
Anything you use will be at best, superficial and short acting

I take collagen (in my coffee) and biotin (at night). It took a while but I've noticed an overall improvement in skin tone and clarity, and my hair grows way faster now!

Sorry meant to add I take Weber naturals.

If you're not deficient you're very unlikely to benefit from it.

I take it, but only because I have a condition which means my body is lower on it than most people, and I am very susceptible to developing issues as a result.

I did quite a lot of research and really, collagen supplements are a bit hit and miss. There's no evidence for them and they won't work miracles for you especially if you don't have a deficiency.

Alwaysyoudoyou · 25/09/2024 06:52

@whateveryouwantmetosay @elderflowerspritzer thanks that's helpful! I'm in my mid 30's and was wondering about 'prevention rather than cure' sort of thing. I'd heard about it being good for skin and hair but hard to know what to believe when it's the people selling the products who are saying it.

@mnhq can you move this to the style and beauty thread at all please?

The research I have read seems to suggest that the only products with decent evidence for impact on skin are retinol and vitamin c. I make sure I do get plenty of collagen through diet though. Sardines are great for hair and skin and have collagen, omega 3 and vit D.

@thenightsaredrawingin @NQOCDarling that's great thank you, I eat quite a lot of mackerel, which also seems to have those benefits. Already take vitamin c and use retinol. So will save myself some money :D

@Alwaysyoudoyou yes any oily fish is great. With the vitamin c I think topical is meant to be more helpful for skin than the pill version providing you already eat lots of fruit and veg.
