Can I make apple crumble the night before?

10 people for lunch on Sunday. Doing a chicken casserole. Apple crumble for pudding..

To make things easier can I make the apple crumble the night before and then reheat before serving?

I’m going to use these glass pots (image from Google - but they are like those empty Gu pudding glass pots) and make the apple crumble individually.

Can this work or will it turn into a dry or soggy mess if I do it the night before?

Thanks for any advice.

We always have apple crumble for pudding on Xmas day. We like our apples almost puréed so I make this and freeze using my dad's cooking apples in September. So Xmas eve I defrost the apple and put in dish. Add the crumble mix cover with clingfm and leave somewhere cool. Xmas day I put it in the oven to cook just as we settle down to eat.lunch. Takes about 25 mins and is delicious.

Make the base and refrigerate in your gu pots
you can also make your topping, bag it (ziplock airtight) and top it when you need to - just before baking.
I did this for Xmas one year. Easiest and least stressful pud ever!

I've recently been cooking the crumble topping separately to the stewed fruit- then adding it on last minute. It remains crispy and dry, rather than going soggy if you are making ahead of time. 😋

Oh I like crumble when the crumble has a soggy bottom (from the fruit) but is brown and crispy on top.

I've got some apples from our trees so this is a fab post. We love apple crumble and didn't think to make up batches of the crumble to keep in freezer.

If I was doing a big dish I'd risk making day before. But not in the ramekins. I'd cook the fruit and make the topping the night before then assemble prior to time. And then put in oven for 10 minutes just before they are required. They run the risk of becoming dehydrated if you cook twice.

My only observation here is that a Gu sized pot might not fulfil my crumble desires. Are you making a few extra?

AmeliaEarache · 25/09/2024 04:03

No need to put it in the fridge. There’s nothing in a crumble that can’t be left out overnight.

Fifthtimelucky · 25/09/2024 08:24

I agree with @Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright

The crumble can sit in the fridge overnight but bring it out a couple of hours before you put it in the oven.

I also agree with @NashvilleQueen.

Gu sized dishes don't sounds big enough for crumble. Crumble needs to be in a normal bowl so that there is plenty of room for lots of custard!

Thank you. Can I assemble the whole crumble uncooked (apples and topping) the night before and then cook in the morning?

Yes. Definitely. You don't need to cook/stew apples for crumble. Just chop them up, put them in the dish with sugar and any other bits (berries, spices, ginger etc), put the topping on and leave until you want to cook. This is by far the best plan - no stewing, no pre cooking, minimal effort.

This is assuming you're using cooking apples, which will stew down in the oven... eaters don't behave in the same way.

I am a pig when it comes to apple crumble so I agree but these people watch their weight! I think you’re right, though. There won’t be enough apple or crumble. It will be quite thin. Argh!

I've done them individually in ordinary cups with saucers. Quite nice looking to serve and much more apple crumble too!
