Annoying packaging changes

I have million and one big problems going on in my life so it's nice (!) to know I can still get wound up by the trivial stuff too.

I have bought the Sainsbury's organic hummus for years.

Had some yesterday, went to put it back in the fridge and couldn't find the lid. Looked in the recycling in case I had thrown it out etc but to no avail. Gave up.

Opened another new one today and exactly the same thing happened. Then I realised there is NOW NO LID!!

Just one of those pull off things that don't seal it back up afterwards.

I am absolutely sure it's to do with sustainability and I'm in favour of this kind of thing as a rule but this is just annoying.

It can no longer be stacked in the fridge, it will probably go hard more quickly and frankly is just annoying (I know I can transfer it into one of the many small tubs I don't have the correct fitting lids for but it's just a faff)

Anyone else got any minor packaging grievances?

Heinz tins aren't stackable, which annoys me no end.

"peel here"...however it isn't even remotely peelable and generally needs a knife and then put in a sandwich bag to keep fresh. Sandwich bag is an option for your forever-open hummus, btw.

I have a set of silicone lids that I picked up from Ikea, they stretch to cover things like cans, mugs, bowls etc. Something like that might help your hummus stay fresh.

Another here who gets grumpy about cans that don’t have the stacking friendly bottoms.

Same issue here. Its very annoying. I have just put mine in a freezer bag to put back in the fridge. Less environmentally friendly than the recyclable lid it used to come with!

Not a change but I'm disproportionately annoyed with the shape of the Sunpat peanut butter jar. It seems designed to encourage waste of at least 10% of the product because it's too hard to get the last out of the jar.

I bought sundae spoons from the pound shop which are really good at scraping out the bit from the wide bit at the bottom.

For the OPs hummus, I'd just put the open tub into a larger plastic tub as less faffy.

Heinz unstackable tins are just another reason along with high price and terrible quality/taste (almost no-one actually prefers Heinz in blind taste tests) to not buy it.

Oh god yes, I bought Tesco sour cream dip, it now has the pull off piece of crap. I'm the only one who uses it so it went a weird texture with no lid, tried tin foil but that was useless, talking about the foil that fuckin tubeless shite needs sorting, it bends, it bends out of the box, it bends in the box, it sticks to itself it's rubbish !!!

MoonlightMemories · 23/09/2024 16:41

Tesco did this quite a while back now with their single/double creams etc. Thankfully I saved a bunch of them, I think I saw it coming somewhat, but it does sound like for you the easiest solution might be to just decant it into another reusable and sealable container so that it doesn't go to waste.

I just put the tub inside a Tupperware and put a lid on that.

muddyford · 23/09/2024 17:57

Sainsbury's have done this with cole slaw, cream and yoghurt as well as other things. It's so it becomes unusable more quickly so you buy again. If the excuse is plastic reduction there are lots of products they could do first. Cling film is your friend but you still can't stack. Lidl have mostly retained a proper lid.

That is actually genius and I can't believe I hadn't thought of that myself, it's so obvious now you've said it!

Otherwise, the little food shower caps that @DizzyWaltzer posted work well, but yes I agree are a pain to wash. You can also get stretchy silicone lids, which might be easier to wash, but I've not tried any of those yet.

ImperfectAlf · 23/09/2024 18:25

I put mine in the washing machine.

Don't tumble them though. That doesn't end well 😁

beasmithwentworth · 23/09/2024 20:51

@muddyford

I have a passionate dislike of cling film. Or it just seems to hate me! On maybe some stretchy lids are in order .. or actually just a Tupperware thing ... but the plastics cupboard needs an overhaul too. Life!

😆 I did think about putting them on a spin cycle in the washing machine to get rid of the water, but a salad spinner might work!

Yes 😢

with several different items!!

what's pissing me off the most is that I'm a 'just in case' person and had a zillion other containers and a huge supply of lids. All recently thrown away trying to be less 'keep everything 'just in case''

arghhhhh
