Turning off 3G before a 5G network infrastructure is in place is ridiculous.

Because now the 4G networks for Vodafone, Three and EE are completely congested and have slowed to a crawl.

I often get 5G but the internet still loads like dial up. Train wifi doesn't work properly, there is patchy coverage generally. It's all a bit rubbish really in 2024.

Puffinlamb23 · 23/09/2024 05:40

It's shocking. In my local city you can't use 5g at all on O2, despite my phone claiming I have full signal. This has happened on multiple devices for me and my friends and family also, so not just me. Web pages don't load, apps don't work. It's entirely unacceptable, but nothing seems to be done about it.

I have wireless broadband from 3, last night they shut the 3g off in Northampton, which is what the router defaults to because 4g is congested (Probably the campsites and caravan parks). The result is 4G under a 1mb per second.

It's not really usable.

What, they are just switching it off?! My phone doesn't even have 5g! Is it back to 1990s for me?

Seems daft.

If o2 has lots of other brands on its network, it's bound to get clogged up unless they massively invest in the quality of the network. I'm with EE and my husband is on o2 and I always have coverage in places where he doesn't.

Nothing loads on 4G here. Utter waste of time. I agree train (and bus) WiFi is useless.

We seem to have gone backwards with technology! Why?!

Unfortunately, O2 is the only network to offer coverage where I live. I'd use another provider if I had the option! I think O2 are able to provide such terrible reception and customer service because they have a monopoly on so many areas. Perhaps the masts should be nationalised and all networks have equal access to them.

It is odd that they've all done it so quickly. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but the government has clearly given a very big incentive to get rid of 3g.

4g doesn't work at all on my Samsung. Says I have a signal but it doesn't actually work. Very frustrating

LizzieSiddal · 23/09/2024 11:16

The same thing happened when they turned of 2G! We live rurally and could get a mobile signal on 2G, they switched it off and we had zilch. You’d think they would learn but I actually think the companies don’t care!

EveryKneeShallBow · 23/09/2024 11:31

I was on the Fife coast yesterday, no phone signal at all, all day.

It's like being back in the early 2000's.
