Sorry to sound daft but why do instructions for wet combing say you have to do on day 1,5,9, 13 then 17? Why would you not do every day or every other day?

Because it's based on the life cycle

But what if Mrs louse that you just spotted was alive the day before or even two days before you spotted her? Does that make a difference as I don't know when she has laid eggs.

That's why you treat eveey 7 days until you dint see them abs xomb out on the days advised.

If there are live adults there are eggs

Combing every day or every other day will work too. The days listed are just the really important days to comb because of the life cycle pattern of the nits.

This website is not very pretty, but explains it all in great detail!

Probably because it takes a really long time to comb all the way through with conditioner and it's not very fun for the adult or child, and it's not really necessary.

Lice eggs hatch within 6-9 days, so technically, if you remove all the lice the first time and then do it again 9 days later before the latest batch have reached the age to lay eggs, that will end the cycle. However, the chances of removing all of them every time are quite slim so it recommends you keep going for a while to ensure they are all gone.
