Steamed sponge pudding - cost

So how much does it cost to steam a pudding for two hours?

I was reminiscing about winter puddings, having just eaten a less than delicious readymade sticky toffee pudding.

I made a very delicious steamed treacle (syrup) sponge last year and then made it agin only this time extremely stingy DH turned the gas down as it is on for 2 hours. This resulted in an undercooked stodgy mass!

Not sure, but have you got a slow cooker? That's where I do my steamed puddings and it works really well.

I hope you gave your DH a piece of your mind though! By ruining the pudding the whole cost of the gas was a waste.

I was also about to comment the same....

did you know you can do it in the slow cooker... and it works nicely

Pressure cooker, I'll be doing my C word puddings in mine for a fraction of the cost.

Oh my god I love Christmas pudding so much I could cry.

I have never made one!

Although don't have a pressure cooker - FIL had one and is obsessed with it.

Sprouts look like they have been to a nuclear reactor.

Water half way up the pudding basin and about 3-3.5hrs on high is how I do mine

Spenditlikebeckham · 22/09/2024 19:12

Next time dh is at work make 1 and eat the lot...
Tight git..

redhatpurplehair · 22/09/2024 19:15

Have you tried a microwave one? Absolutely superb - but you have to eat it right away or it ends up like a brick!

Butterflyfern · 22/09/2024 19:15

Also I can recommend this recipe if you want something a bit different to the usual syrup, jam, sticky toffee etc. Sticky orange sponge pudding with orange sauce

@Spenditlikebeckham

Grin tomorrow!

Although I pretty sure a whole one would kill me. It's a 2lb basin.

I love Mumsnet today

I do high for about 4 hours.

My Christmas puddings I do the first steam for 7 hours on low, then 2 months (or 14 months) later on Xmas day another 3 hours

I use the microwave too - this recipe but I usually chuck in a bit more syrup than it suggests! And swap in butter instead of marg.

Is this a suet pudding we're talking about?
I can't tell you how to make one but, can I come round when it's ready? 🍴

Cerialkiller · 22/09/2024 19:32

I just do it in the oven at 120. Wrap it in foil to keep in the moisture as usual and come out the same. Usually only do it when I'm slow cooking a leg of lamb or something.

Do have a go - they’re so much nicer than shop ones! And not at all difficult to make - it’s just a case of mixing it all up. I use an old GH recipe which is always popular - not so dark, dense and heavy as most shop ones. Even people who think they don’t like Christmas pudding are often converted.

I boil (simmer) mine for 5-6 hours, which means you can’t go,out, since the water needs topping up now and then, but then it’s only once a year.

Soluckyinlove · 22/09/2024 19:40

This is a family recipe. I steam it in a secondhand electric steamer that I was given.

Apologies to the microwave lovers, but steamed puddings made in them are just not as nice. A well steamed pudding kind of caramelises while also staying super light. A microwave one doesn't do that and also goes weirdly rubbery very quickly.

I also do Xmas puddings in the slow cooker, I cook them on high for the same length of time as the recipe states to steam them. Boiling water about a quarter of the way up. The nice thing about Christmas pudding is that it seems just about impossible to overcook them. One year we were so stuffed that we left it in the slow cooker for 5 hours and it was absolutely perfect still.
