Question for seamstresses or anybody with knowledge of repairing clothes

I've just bagged a £70 denim jumpsuit on vinted for £15, priced due to damage.

It has split under the armpit. The seller tried to sew it up but it split again.

Will I be able to have this professionally repaired or is it a lost cause? I hope not because I love it so much 😬

I'd unpick that hatchet job, put a piece of thin fabric inside to stabilise the split, and invisible darn it back together.
Depends how sensitive you are to feeling fabric or stitches on your armpit.

SummerGardenFlowers · 22/09/2024 17:59

I'd think a pro could sort that out very easily indeed.

I've recently done this on some cargo pants. Fusible web tape or patch in between fabric patch and clothes then iron in place. Then darn with matching thread.

Easy job, just be careful undoing the previous repair

BlackFriYay · 22/09/2024 20:39

I won't be attempting it myself, my ability to alter things stretches as far as using webbing tape to take up a pair of jeans, and even that took several goes.

This will be going to the seamstress at the dry cleaners 🙂

Have a look on your local pages (nextdoor etc) it will be a lot cheaper and often better and quick
Dry cleaners change far too much for repair work

That's a good idea thank you!

I've just spoken to a lady via a Facebook page who will do it for £10 next week, happy days! 😊

@BlackFriYay Brilliant!! I thought there should be someone on Facebook etc,
I wonder what the dry cleaners would have changed?

Atleast double I'd have thought. I had a much thinner, summer jumpsuit taken up by two inches and they wanted £20 for that which felt a bit steep for such a quick job.

It's a skill but £20! I can do some repair work, but things like zips, no chance !
Last time I looked at zip replacement ( for a friend, she presumed i would fix her coat) it was nearly £40 that was nine years ago!

Are you on Instagram? I could watch their videos all day

I'm glad it's not just me being tight and somebody agrees £20 is steep for the job.

£40 for a zip replacement? 😵

I am on IG and I'll give them a follow, thanks for the suggestion.

metal zips, especially ones long enough for a coat, are expensive to buy. Sewing them in is not an easy or quick job.

upinaballoon · 23/09/2024 10:44

What rate of pay do you think seamstresses should get per hour?

Thistooshallpass24 · 23/09/2024 10:46

@toadinthebucket I'm aware it's a skill, I didn't say it wasn't, but £40 is a lot to replace a zip in a high street coat.

Well yes, but replacing a zip is the same amount of work regardless of how much the garment cost originally.

Of course the problem is cheap, low quality clothes in the first place, but never mind!

Thistooshallpass24 · 23/09/2024 10:52

@Haroldwilson I'm fully aware. I used to work in a haberdashery, because I was skilled in something others were not. I'm not arguing with randoms on Mumsnet.
