Can any cricket fans advise about buying tickets?

DS1 turns 18 next year and is incredibly difficult to buy for. His useless dad used to take him to international cricket matches maybe two or three times a year and, as a child, ex-fil used to get him a child's season ticket for our county so ex used to take him there a fair bit too. This has fizzled out since ex-fil died and he hasn't been at all in the last few years. I know he'd love to go and every now and then he complains that ex never mentions it or mentions it but then tickets don't materialise.

I thought getting him some tickets for next year would be a good 18th present, even though his birthday is out of season, as it's the one thing I can think of he'd really like. Season ticket is out as he works, plays cricket himself and has exams next year and has family and friends holidays planned so I don't think it would be worth it. So I thought internationals would be best bet and signed up to a priority ticket thing. However, I'm just flummoxed by all the choice and different formats. I think this is for ballots so I might not even get what I choose anyway, but I don't know what to choose!

I know he likes the traditional formats and likes test cricket (if I'm phrasing it correctly!), but then you have to pick a day...? Or is it not worth it unless you can do all four? Even if I could get them, I don't think I'd want to commit him to four days away due to his commitments and who would go with him - I'll get ex a ticket but tbh I don't want to get him 4! Not sure that he has a friend who is that keen, even team mates love playing but not watching apparently! If you can do one day, which would be best or is it just pot luck? What about one day internationals? Are they seen as a good way to watch?

Sorry if these are silly questions but I don't want to spend money on something that's meant to be a special gift and then it be rubbish or not quite what he would have wanted!

For the test matches, you don’t need to get tickets for all days. Most people just pick one day. I would advise getting a ticket for day 1 or day 2 so he’s guaranteed to get a full days play (weather permitting!)

I personally find 50 over cricket (ODIs) a little dull but T20s are good fun and normally only take 4 hours.

Sign up to the England cricket website and they send info on on sale dates etc. generally weekends are hardest to get, but unless it's Australia you can usually find them

Agree with others

You want day 1 or 2 of a test ideally - they usually start on a Wednesday or Thursday and iT20 is good fun.

If it's Edgbaston you're after you now have to pay for priority ticket ballot and not just have bought international tickets previously.

Ask around friends and family too.

And make sure you do your research on which stand to go for so you're not umming and ahhing when your slot is available to purchase.
