Hand foot and mouth with christening today?

AEP123 · 22/09/2024 07:55

we have a family christening today but my DS has woken up with HFM. He’s got the spot but is generally well in himself.

NHS online says as long as they’re not unwell then they can still go to school/nursery ect. But it feels a bit wrong knowingly taking him to an occasion with a contagious disease?

I should stay home with him shouldn’t I?

I’d stay home.

Stay home. You would feel awful infecting the baby who is being christened, and HFM is really contagious.

Send link to NHS advice to christening babies parents and say you're in two minds, here's why, what would they prefer you to do?

They might say they'd love you to come, glad you told them so you can all avoid physical contact...

It depends how it spreads (airborne or physical touch or what) and their attitude to these things.

If I was them I'd appreciate being consulted.

I'll add... I don't know how contagious it is. 😁
So if it's really contagious, I'd let them know and stay home.

Ask the parents and see what they say.

AEP123 · 22/09/2024 08:01

I’ve already messaged the parent to say I’ll stay home with DS and asked whether it’s still ok for DH and DD to go as she doesn’t have symptoms at the moment but obviously I can’t guarantee she hasn’t caught it from him until symptoms show.

I wonder why the NHS advice is to crack on if it's very contagious. 🤔 That's a quizzical face generally not at pp btw. 😁

Mumistiredzzzz · 22/09/2024 08:02

I would stay home. I find the NHS guidance on this absolutely baffling, it's so contagious and can make you so unwell.

Sleepyasd · 22/09/2024 08:03

Stay home. The nhs advice imo is ridiculous it’s a really nasty illness and the advice just encourages passing it on . My dc were so unwell with it

waferthinham · 22/09/2024 08:03

I’d stay at home, sister had that when she was 13 or so and I ended up with viral symptoms as well (both sent home from school in the same day). Fever of 39 on my part, swollen glands and couldn’t do a thing for 3-4 days. I never developed a rash but she did. Felt bloody miserable for days. I wouldn’t want to give it to a baby, if there’s any chance of avoiding pass passing it on.

BeerForMyHorses · 22/09/2024 08:05

Stay home. HFM is horrendous for Little ones. The nhs advice needs updating as it's ridiculous they are still allowed to nursery/school.

I think it’s because it’s generally quite harmless and very common in children. Obviously a bit uncomfortable and not nice for the kids to feel run down though so I wouldn’t want to purposely make anyone ill 😫

Because there’s so many things children get they’d never be at nursery or school if you kept them home every time they had a contagious illness. HFM doesn’t make the majority really unwell. Unless there’s a policy about it you’d send them in to nursery and school. It’s a bit different taking them to a social event though knowing they’ll likely infect the hosts and possibly older people given the type of event.

Evolutionarygoals · 22/09/2024 08:14

Just to add that when my niece had it, my better got it too and was really unwell for over a week. It can be really horrible. I'd stay home

Every single child I know who has had hfm has been really really poorly. My daughter lost fingernails due to blistering.
