A manager that does not respond to a single email or message that you send them?

Not one.

Will not mention if they are coming in that day or not.

Will not do tour appraisals.

Will not delegate any tasks to anyone.in the department.

Will not communicate plans for department/company.

Will not give you access to systems that you should have access too, and they do all tasks themselves for all people who "should" be using the system.

But will help you when in person and is friendly and all that, let's you be flexible with time etc.

Ring them. Give them a reasonable amount of time to respond and then ring them for every single query. Make it more inconvenient to ignore your emails than it is to answer them.

They will not answer the phone.

Is there another manager there?
Cc them in to all emails? Make queries general eg are either of you... Or do either of you know ..

RightSedFred · 21/09/2024 20:43

Well then if you have Query X and tried emailing and got no response and you have tried phoning them and got no answer, refer the issue to another manager in the business and ask them what they would like you to do about Query X because you can't get hold of your manager.

Berga · 21/09/2024 20:44

I wouldn't bother with them anymore. I'd go to the next person up.

BlackOrangeFrog · 21/09/2024 20:46

Oh this is so fucking annoying. I went to his manager, and got told to stop criticising my manager.

So fuck em all.

Just crack on and if you get pulled up on it have a record of every unanswered email or call.

AngelicKaty · 21/09/2024 20:53

If you've worked there longer than two years, raise a grievance.

Ifoughthefight · 21/09/2024 20:55

It is waste of time working with such managers. A job is a good one for you only if your manager knows how to manages and actually likes you

HappiestSleeping · 21/09/2024 20:59

You have two options.

  1. Leave
  2. Make every decision yourself with assumed authority. Email your manager with what you intend to do and sign off with "if I don't hear from you by xx date, I'll assume agreement". Then just crack on.
poppyzbrite4 · 21/09/2024 21:00

I couldn't work like that so after going to their line manager I would go to HR. I would also start looking for another job.

timeforanewmoniker · 21/09/2024 21:05

Personally, I'd use a tool that schedules automated email follow ups to automatically re-email them with every single query I had on a four hourly basis until they responded.

But then I'm happy to be annoying like that.

Ah then you're in a no win situation.

Leave or do what PP said and ask for feedback by a certain date or you will go ahead with x,y,z.

Balloonhearts · 21/09/2024 21:19

I'd keep going to other managers then and ask what should I do with this as I can't reach x. Over and over and over. Or as another poster has suggested, tell him what you intend to do, tell him when you will do it unless you hear from him first.

Starseeking · 21/09/2024 21:48

Take your own authority, and make sure to send them an email following, telling them about all decisions you have made, so they can't say they weren't told at the time.

PoshMonkey · 21/09/2024 22:08

Ask them for a quick word when they are in office. Ask them how they would like you to communicate queries because you understand they are busy but do need a response from them.

Different managers communicate differently.

I had one boss who asked me to text him but rarely replied. I would just send him messages saying I'd done XYZ and would assume that was okay unless I heard otherwise.

If that fails then just leave. Life is too short for rubbish managers!
