What to do with dog? On holiday and in hospital

On holiday in UK, 200 miles from home. Just me and my mum plus dog. My mum has been taken to hospital over night (fairly regular occurance). I couldn't go with her due to the dog. We are staying in a static caravan and signs up saying not to leave dog unattended in caravan.
Got car but its fairly warm so really don't want leave him in the car.
What can I do?? Only got here yesterday afternoon!

Could you put a call out on the local Facebook group asking if any registered boarders (home or kennels) might be able to take him as an urgent case?

FiveShelties · 21/09/2024 10:21

Is there a kennels close to caravan site?

Chowtime · 21/09/2024 10:21

signs up saying not to leave dog unattended in caravan.

Is this a request, a contractual obligation, or a legal requirement?

If it's a request I'd ignore it
If it's a legal requirement I'd adhere to it.
If it's a contractual obligation and I'd like to come back to the same place I'd adhere to it but if I wasn't bothered about being allowed to come back, I'd ignore it.

Hope your mum feels better soon.

Well, you won’t be able to see her. If it’s a regular occurrence presumably she will be fine. We all went through similar during lockdown. I was in hospital for three weeks without a visitor but I had FaceTime and WhatsApp. You could always try speaking to the holiday park manager and explaining the situation, but honestly it’s just one of those things. I hope your mum is soon feeling better.

Mindymomo · 21/09/2024 10:24

Check for local dog boarders / dog walkers online. Are there any other people staying that are friendly and willing to pet sit. I wouldn’t leave dog in car, even if it’s not hot, hospital car parks are usually monitored.

ThePure · 21/09/2024 10:25

You know your dog. Is he going to howl the place done, chew stuff up or toilet everywhere if left or will he curl up and be fine? Do you have a crate? If you think dog will actually be OK then you could ask the manager if you can do it as an emergency

Littletreefrog · 21/09/2024 10:27

Either dont visit your mother in hospital as it seems its a fairly regular none life threatening occurrence.

Or leave dog in caravan despite the sign if you think he will be OK.

Or go to the caravan site reception and explain the situation and see what they suggest. If it was the site we go to im pretty sure the receptionists/ground staff would mind him for a few hours.

Gymmum82 · 21/09/2024 10:27

If the dog is used to being left and unlikely to trash the place/howl/chew anything id just leave him in the caravan.
Otherwise id contact a local boarding kennel and see if they had space. Or accept that I wouldn’t be visiting my mum. Presumably if this is a regular occurrence she’s very used to being in hospital alone a lot

AdaColeman · 21/09/2024 10:36

I'd speak to Reception at the site. Once you've explained about your Mum, they may agree to look after him, or know someone locally who will. What type of dog is it, large vicious etc?

ThirstyThursday · 21/09/2024 10:37

@reallifeboogie

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum xx

Given this is not uncommon for your Mum, would she expect you to visit knowing you have her dog

if I was on the site I'd happily look after the dog for you

if I was your Mum I'd rather you stayed with the dog than visit me.

if I knew the dog would behave & not ruin anything or bark his head off I'd leave him in the caravan with windows open if it's not too hot!

WaitingForMojo · 21/09/2024 10:41

Where in the U.K. are you? Maybe someone on mn will be able to help?

reallifeboogie · 21/09/2024 15:10

I asked at reception and the lovely lady offered to have the dog behind the counter for a couple of hours ❤️

Still some lovely people in the world

AdaColeman · 21/09/2024 15:28

That's good news @reallifeboogie , how kind of her. Your Mum would be glad to see you too. I hope she makes a swift recovery.

You'll need another holiday after all this!
