Heavy Bleeding, Fibroid, Coil

Just wondering where I go from here. December 2022 I started with really heavy bleeding (36 then, 38 now). GP referred me to hospital who said I've got a large fibroid and I had the coil fitted in May 2023. That fell out some time around Jan this year. Another one fitted in May, that fell out on Thursday so I'm basically housebound now as the bleeding is so bad. Hospital have given me an appointment for 31st October to go back in to the 'procedure clinic'. GP won't let me make an appointment for anything gynaecology related as I'm under the hospital so say I have to see them.

My questions are:

  1. Any advice on how to manage this until hospital at the end of October
  2. What should I be asking for at the hospital, because twice now my coil has come out and I'm back to square 1

Just feeling really down about it all because it massively restricts what I can do without ending up in a mess while I'm out and about.

I've got 1 DC age 5 and won't be having another (can't afford the childcare) in case it's relevant

Have you had the fibroid removed?
Has GP offered any medication to reduce the bleeding?
Was it a mirena or copper coil?

Soooooooverthisnow · 21/09/2024 09:00

No I've not had the fibroid removed. Both times it was the mirena, they didn't offer me anything else or any other options just the coil. GP did give me transexamic acid when it first started in 2022 but won't let me make an appointment now because I'm still under the hospital so told me I have to see them, which I am but not until 31st October so I'm a bit stuck until then.

I could make a GP appointment to ask for an iron test I guess because both times previously I've ended up anaemic. That might get me through the gatekeepers of appointments?

What age did your mum start with menopause symptoms?

DustyLee123 · 21/09/2024 09:02

Was it a female GP you saw?

Soooooooverthisnow · 21/09/2024 09:04

Male GP. Mum started menopause at 50. Feel like I'd take a hysterectomy tomorrow if it was an option 😏

I wonder if you’d be better seeing a female GP who might be a bit more sympathetic. You really could do with the tablets again, until you get to the hospital. If you do, lay it on thick about how it’s affecting your ability to work.

I'll ring GP again on Monday and beg! Thanks for replying @DustyLee123

You have my full sympathy and unfortunately your GP sounds rubbish. I’m under a gynaecologist for the same thing, but my gp will still see me for anything related. Are you under a named gynaecologist? If so, you could get in touch with their secretary, explain the gp situation and see if there is anything the gynaecologist can suggest.

I started down this road 9 years ago. The coil is always the first option. You’ll find they will try to make you live with it, in the hope that menopause happens and the fibroid shrinks. I’m finally getting a hysterectomy in a few months (aged 48), as mine have now grown too large. I wish I’d asked much earlier; there is a lot of gaslighting that goes on in the NHS regarding this particular condition..

Smallroomtetris · 21/09/2024 09:16

It sounds like a combination of the fibroid and menopause is the problem. Can you ask for am embolization?

Soooooooverthisnow · 21/09/2024 09:44

9 years, it's so bad and so many people suffer. I think I am going to ask for embolisation. These coils are just not working for me.

If two have fallen out it would be a waste of time and money to do that again, and I’d say that to them. Work out what you want, and ask for it.
Hysterectomy is the last thing they want to do these days, yet years ago they whipped your womb out at the first hint of heavy periods.
