Repair or buy new

Washing machine broke down this morning. The drum is not turning to wash a load. So the spinning isn't working.

Another thread gave two possiblties.

  1. belt, or
  2. brushes

Just wondering what's the best way forward.

Repair or buy new. It's zanussi and I can't remember how old it is. Maybe since 2010. I can't remember when.

The machine never gave us any issues until now. I would be tempted to get a repair person in and spend what about 100 on the service and parts.
I live at home with my mother but she wants to buy new.

The thing is, I think she may have dementia but it's not diagnosed. She's doing stuff that doesn't make sense. I know on Wednesday she puked blankets into the machine. It's only today I am noticing the machine not turning. I wasn't home yesterday. I don't know if she overloaded the machine. Or it could be just general wear and tear. I would be slow to buy new.

Well it’s 14 years old or thereabouts, so I think it’s probably time to get new.

I'd replace it at that age, anticipating that other components are also worn and further repairs may be in the pipeline.

Buy new. We did through currys and got rhe domestic and general insurance about 4 pound a month. Its great. My mother has the insurance they replaced her 6 year old washing machine as they couldn't repair it.

At 14 years old I’d buy new.

Buy new as something else will go wrong next with it

I agree, new at that age.

If you pay to repair now and something else goes wrong, you'll then feel bad you paid to repair so won't want to buy new, so you continue to repair and it ends up costing a fortune.

Hope your Mum is OK.

At 14 years old its time for new. Just dont pay to have them take the old one away. I hate how everything now has become extras... Take away packaging £5, install machine £25, take away old one £10. Its all a racket.
