exercising with a broken toe

So kids are back at school, time for my grand health kick, I used to be great at keeping in a shape I was happy with but lots of life setbacks this year (very ill Jan to March then two house moves!!) plus being in the peri menopause and find it difficult to keep the weight off anyway, has meant the weight has crept on and I'm looking cellulitey and flabby.

I've really gotten back into a great routine these past few weeks with the kids back (I normally find a combo of dieting with running and or power walking, plus a bit of HIIT and yoga works for me). But this morning have managed to break my toe - just back from A&E. Gahhhhhhh

I am just so gutted, we go on our first proper abroad holiday in nearly two yrs at the end of Oct and I was so looking forward to getting back to a version of myself that i'm happy with for it.

What on earth can I do exercise wise? The nurse who was really nice mentioned cycling and weight training - I see the weight training stuff all over social media but and have tried cross fit twice with a friend who is into it but it just makes me look really chunky and square. Same with spin when i used to go to a gym and that was all the rage.

Which toe did you break? I broke my baby toe a few years ago and was only off exercise for a couple of weeks.

Why don't you book a personal trainer session for some advice - I've thought that yes, some circuits could work and, depending on the toe, that could include some cardio like bike/rowing/cross trainer?

Can you do yoga? That would help tone everything up while your toe heals. I watched videos on Youtube 'Move with Nicole'.

Take care if using a rowing machine. I put quite a lot of force on my feet when using it because most of the drive comes from the legs.

I'm pretty sure I broke one of my toes recently (didn't bother having it checked, as I gather there is nothing that can be done).

I have been doing a lot of swimming and Aquafit classes. I've also done a lot of walking.

I didn't cycle or use the cross trainer, but think I could have done because they ate pretty low impact and because my toes would have been protected by wearing trainers.

I found yoga was difficult because having bare feet meant there was no protection for the toes and there was too much pressure on them when doing things like downward dog, planks, and balancing on the affected foot.

@MrSeptember really?! 3rd toe in low down where the webbing is and it looks like uour feet starts but it’s actually your toe. That’s still quite a lot of time out with only 5 wks to go tho 🙁

If you can swim and access a pool then that is the ultimate all round exercise and of course wouldn't put any pressure on your toe.

But I would have thought anything where the weight isn't on your feet would be good.
However, I'm neither a physio or personal trainer. Why not ask for advice at the gym ?
