Washing machine drum nit turning

BlackBucket · 20/09/2024 09:30

I tried to put on a wash this morning but looks like the machine is not working.

It's filling with water as usual but when it comes to the wash cycle the drum is not turning. The clock and the timer still counts down.

I am able to pause the wash and drain the machine.

I tried putting it in a separate spin cycle but that's not working either.

I tried a different cycle but that's not working either.

The machine can fill with water but the drum is not spinning.

I cleaned the filter and drained the front pipe.

Just wondering would this be an easy fix for a repair man. I am thinkinging a repair would be approx 60 pounds with any parts separate. I live with my aging mother and it's her home but she's not making any sense whatsoever. She doesn't want me to get a repair service in favour of buying a new machine. It makes no sense what so ever.

Sounds like the belt has gone. Definitely cheaper to repair, but if your mum wants a new one, let her.

I think my mother has dementia because it's behavioural stuff happening with her. She's up now and she's adamant that there's a coin or a tou stuck. It was my load of clothes that's gone in. It's mainly underwear and there's no pockets in my clothes and there's no coins or toys or anything in my clothes.

I would nearly go with a broken belt too as a possibly.

The the thing is I could try and get a repair person today for tomorrow or Monday instead of ignoring this and that's her answer. Just ignore and talk about it.

She's adamant it's a toy even though there's no children or toys in the house.

Sadly I do not think you are looking at a cost effective nor an easy fix. the only hope is if the thing is still in warranty in which case call the manufacter.

Eighteen months ago I spent way over three weeks and 200 for the parts alone. the hourly charge for the mechanic doubled it. I tried to get my old machine repaired. It remained terminal. I thought it had finally been fixed when the drum went around but it then the whole machine launched into lurching and moving all around the utility, cornering my terrified old dog then spewing water out through what should have been a sealed door and flooding the utility as the wretched thing continued to draw in water. It took hours to clean up the mess.

I waved goodbye and bought a cosmetically dinked new machine that has proved far more economical to run and actually washes and fully cleans the clothes.

Something else I noticed.

I can drain the machine but at the end of the drain function it stays on 1 and it doesn't go down to 0. I can turn off the machine and switch it off and then it goes off and I can open the door without water. So it seems as if the machine isn't registering a drain.

So these two things have both happened this morning. I'm wondering if theres something where they go hand in hand maybe. I don't know.

It's all so odd. Really how there's two issues at once.

You can have a brand new machine delivered tomorrow for £200/250

It's going to cost around that to have the current machine fixed and you'll have to wait for someone's availability for the initial diagnosis visit, and then for the part(s) to arrive.

Do clean the filter before anything though. Then tell your mum you're getting someone in to remove the toy. 😉

@BlackBucket it could be the belt, but my money would be on the carbon brushes needing replacing. That's been the solution when my washing machine drum refused to turn.

The brushes wear down after a fair amount of use, but it's a cheap and fairly easy fix. You can buy the parts online or in a repair shop if you know the exact model.

You might even be able to do it yourself - DH has done ours, it involves getting dirty and a lot bit of swearing, but it's doable.

If I was to call a repair service would they have the parts? I could check YouTube.

It's a pity it's Friday. If this was Monday I could order parts.

I would get a new one.
By the time you've paid for plumbers call out/ labour/ pars it's not worth repairing
Check and clean filters as something small could be caught
Last month I bought an 8kg really quiet beko for £250 delivered free

Bitteralmond · 20/09/2024 16:19

Ours did this and it needed new brushes fitting. My husband was able to do this, but if you need someone to come out and fit them, I doubt whether it would be cost effective.

I am able to learn quickly. I will check YouTube videos later.

The thing is if it as to buy brushes and check YouTube on how to replace them, the whole entire thing will likely take me a week or two. Whereas I could buy a new machine this weekend and it get delivered by mid week.

A tip if you want to order a new machine
John Lewis deliver free
Most places charge £25.. which I think is cheeky when you're spending a large amount
I did get a scrap metal dealer to collect my old one
Every £ counts!

I agree. It’s always the brushes when it has happened with any of my washing machines.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/09/2024 18:19

Order from AO and the new one could be installed on Sunday - and no trying to fault diagnose, order parts, then get somebody in to install parts and then come back if it hasn't sorted the problems.

JohnTheRevelator · 20/09/2024 18:38

Sounds like the drive belt has gone. I had to get an engineer out to put a new one on mine when this happened to my machine.
