How do your kids listen to music?

Just that really. My ds, aged 9 likes listening to his radio, but is starting to develop his tastes. I've made him a play list on my old phone on Spotify, but he can't have the phone or have it in his room at night. What do you do? Thanks

On an Echo device

You can link Spotify to alexa. DS2 listens that way

My oldest has a kids Alexa that is linked to Apple Music and we have an Apple Music family account. It's also linked to their iPads.

BlueRaincoat1 · 19/09/2024 20:10

Ah we don't have an Alexa or Echo. The idea of kids shouting at it all day stresses me out!

Mine (DD8) has Spotify on her tablet so uses that. Parental controls let lock apps/functions I don't want her to use

miltown · 19/09/2024 20:12

My 10 year old has Spotify on his tablet, but has a cd player in his bedroom so he can listen to audiobooks and music at bedtime.

BlueRaincoat1 · 19/09/2024 20:14

Thr kids' tablet is a Fire one, so I doubt I can put spotify on that unfortunately

I'd love a CD player for him, but then I'd have to start buying him CDs!

Another here that uses Amazon Echo/Alexa. My 3 also use theirs to listen to audiobooks, and even guided meditation at bedtime.

My DD age 8 has a portable mp3 player with headphones and I download onto her favourite songs. She's uses it in the car, at home etc and I don't have to hear certain songs on repeat!

This looks great, but I assume I wouldn't download from Spotify onto it is that right? It would just be from music I own and have downloaded onto a laptop?

Mini Yoto player? Won’t link to Spotify though.

No you wouldn't be able to download from Spotify playlists. You'd need to download music from a store or wherever you usally get it, onto laptop, then upload from there.
They all usually have radio and ebook access on them too, so as well as any downloads, you'd have radio for him to listen to and of course any ebooks you upload.

We just bought ds7 a cd player for his bedroom, and some second-hand cds (Music and audiobooks)
he absolutely loves it, and he also loves going to car boot sales and charity shops with his pocket money to look for new cds that take his fancy!

I know it’s old school, and he does have more modern tech too (iPad etc) but I don’t like him having access to them all the time so Spotify didn’t work for us (and we have an echo downstairs and he just messes around with it too much asking it silly questions etc lol)
He loves putting music on in his room when he’s playing with his toys.

I really like this idea.

Yoto mini. We love our Yotos.

Singleandproud · 19/09/2024 20:51

At that age a CD player and regular trips to the charity shop for CDS. DD is a teen now so it's mostly Spotify and headphones but she still likes using her CD player

BlueRaincoat1 · 19/09/2024 20:54

I think a CD player with a better radio than his current one might be the way to go for the moment - thanks for the ideas.

On echo dot. It is THE most used item in his bedroom. We have Amazon Music Unlimited and he listens to music constantly. Never, ever 'new' music!

BlueRaincoat1 · 19/09/2024 22:10

With an Echo dot or an Alexa, is there a downside to having them in a bedroom?

Not in our case. He literally uses it as an alarm in the morning and for listening to music. I occasionally hear him ask 'her' a question about his homework!

sanityisamyth · 19/09/2024 22:55

On his Alexa speaker

AlexanderArnold · 19/09/2024 22:58

Alexa here too, on an echo dot. No downside, except not portable so can't use it in the car. He also uses it for audio books and mindfulness.

MonsteraMama · 19/09/2024 23:01

I assume if he has an Amazon Fire tablet that you have some sort of Amazon account? In which case why not just use Amazon Music on the tablet and a Bluetooth speaker?
