The ultimate family car (Nissan Qashqai or other suggestions?)

Hi,

We're looking to upgrade our loyal and faithful Ford Fiesta to a bigger car, now that our toddler is getting bigger and we might at some point consider having a second child. We're looking for the ultimate family car, if there is such a thing! We love road trips and we often drive to other countries, so we need as much space as possible for suitcases and still be comfortable as a family of 3 (at some point 4).

I've been told Nissan Qashqai is THE mum car, and I've driven one and loved it, but I want to look at other options and recommendations before we make such a big decision.

Here's what's very important to us:

  • safety
  • big (especially boot size)
  • handy features that make life easier with kids in the backseat (cruise control, parking sensors, satnav, etc.)
  • reliability (also as a secondhand purchase)
  • easy to repair/get parts for
  • roof rack is a bonus

What's less important or we're willing to compromise on:

  • wow factor and overall looks
  • price (preferably not too high but we’re willing to pay more if it means we’ll have more things on our important list)
  • resale value (we’ll likely use it for a long time, until the upkeep costs us more than a new one)
  • cost of ownership / running costs (again, preferably not too pricey, but other factors are more important)

Please let me know if you have a car you can recommend!

Thanks :)

The boot space is rubbish on a qashqai. Look at the skoda Karoq which ticks all your boxes.

WaneyEdge · 19/09/2024 23:19

Love our Qashqai and Juke, however they do not have large boots. I don’t find it a gas guzzler and it is perfectly comfortable.

I have 1.6 Qashqai and I love it. Don't find it to be a gas guzzler at all. My previous car was vw polo and qq uses a bit more gas than the polo but not that much more.

I've driven it all around uk and also in Europe. It's roomy in back for the teens and we all love the panoramic roof.

I bought a new Volvo XC40 in February. DH and I are totally smitten with it. It is the absolute bees knees. My daughter and Son-in-Law bought the same car that’s a couple of years old more recently (they have two young children) and they love it too.

nmhermione · 20/09/2024 15:14

Wow, thank you so much for all your replies. I'm not interested in the Nissan Qashqai anymore - thanks for all the warnings - and am looking into all the other suggestions you've made. The Skoda Karoq seems to come out very well - lots of votes for that one! - but we'll check them all out. Thanks everyone, and keep the suggestions and recommendations coming :)

Qashqai's are terrible if you plan to do extended rear facing, there's just not enough space for front leg room. For such a big footprint the internal space is crap. We upgraded to a Ford galaxy and love it for space and practicality. It's never going to win any style awards but we love it for function gutted they stopped making them tbh as ours is getting on now.

There are three cars that when you speak to former owners all say they'd love to buy a newer one again and regret that they're no longer made:

  • Ford Galaxy
  • Citroen C3 Picasso
  • Vauxhall Zafira
It's like the magic formula of space, practicality, and versatility in a family car keeps getting found and lost again.

My 'mum car' is a VW golf estate. Easy to drive, good fuel consumption, loads of room. It's about 10 years old, seems fine - dd had it for a few years but I've got it back from her now.
Our other car is functionally similar but better for round town fuel economy and also if we need to go in ulez zones - Toyota Corolla 'touring sport'.

Malbecfan · 20/09/2024 17:10

My VW Touran is roomy and economical. 2 weeks ago, it took 5 adults plus luggage from Devon to Manchester, then 4 adults back again without needing to refuel. I regularly get 600 miles from a 55 litre tank. There are 2 pop up seats in the boot - you can't put much in the boot if you use them, but when the kids had friends over it was really useful. I had a Touran previously that did 125k miles in 7 years without any trouble whatsoever.

SnugUser · 20/09/2024 17:31

We've just upgraded our Citroen C4, bought an MG HS. It's an SUV style car. Lots of leg room inside (front and back) decent size boot. It has a removable tray so you can make it bigger if needed.

Only had it a month or so, so still working out fuel consumption but seems good.

RedRosie · 20/09/2024 17:31

On the SUV type car ... I think a Mazda CX5 would fit the bill. Or Volvo XC60 or XC90. Have you looked at a Lexus? NX or RX I think.

Personally I love an estate car. So much room.

Mynewnameis · 20/09/2024 17:32

Mazda cx5

Chipsahoy · 20/09/2024 17:36

Surprised the Troc has been mentioned. The boot is tiny and the back seat is quite small.
Honda CRV. It’s like a tardis. Very reliable. Even the older ones have cameras and cruise control etc

Safety's at the top of your list - Volvo estate.

Would consider other estates too and not SUVs if you'd safety conscious

This. I really don’t like SUVs and am a big estate fan. If you want practical boot space I don’t think they can be beaten. I’ve had a great Ford focus and also Vauxhall Astra estate.

A friend has a Dacia Duster and raves about it for the money. And considering the number of problems another friend with an Audi has had in its first year, the Duster has been trouble-free. The interior is a bit dated, but it's a lot of car for not much. I had one of their estates models as a loan car a while ago, and whilst it was a little plasticky inside it drove well and barely sipped fuel at motorway speeds.

Yeah but the op mentioned safety, the Dacia duster barely passes safety ratings.

ThatDreamSheep · 20/09/2024 17:40

I don't have one but would love a Volvo XC90. With the 7 seats optional for giving lifts or extra large boot space!

4 of us - adult sized - have been camping in France in it twice. With a roof box. I do all my shopping, including for 7 people for 6 weeks over the summer with no issues. Unless you want 3 car seats in the back it's absolutely fine. The size of cars these days is ridiculous.

GameOfJones · 20/09/2024 17:41

My "mum car" was a Ford Grand C-Max. Not particularly pretty but inoffensive looking. It was AMAZING. Sliding doors so no worries about DDs slamming open the car doors and easy in tighter parking spaces. Tonnes of room in the back, we got an IKEA flatpack wardrobe in there easily by folding the middle seat down. Loved it.

We only got rid of it because we moved to a town with lots of public transport and most things in walking distance so we downsized to an electric runaround car.

SUV-type cars are just dreadful and tacky looking, make the roads so much more dangerous, the owners can never park them efficiently, I could go on... Bring back the good old middle class family estate car. 😀

Love estates but they are a bitch to park. I'm with you on huge SUVS. Absolutely naff as anything.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 20/09/2024 17:46

The Qashqai is small inside, particularly the boot. Tuu hi inking about I don't see many around these days.

We ended up with a zafira for twins, dogs and the amount of stuff we carted around. Can't fault it. Huge boot, could still fit buggy in boot if 7 seats were up, nice high driving position.

Ugly as fuck but it does the job.

Absolutely love them, much better for sliding heavy stuff in and out as well as no “lip” in the boot. Easier for dogs as well.

Got a triple IKEA pax in my Ford focus and that was with Dd in one of the back seats! Did have to enlist the help of random people in the ikea carpark 😁

RedRosie · 20/09/2024 19:22

@nmhermione DH just said "has she considered an Alfa Romeo Stelvio Veloce 2 litre turbo?" but I think he's projecting 😁

We have a Mazda CX-5 and it’s a great family car

+1
Looks great. Full of gadgets, really economical and reliable.

I've personally heard mixed reports on Nissans reliability.
