What medication do you take for a common cold?

RichterScale7 · 19/09/2024 00:24

I usually just suffer through it with lots of water / hot drinks and ibuprofen. Paracetamol does nothing for me. On holiday in the US now with a head full of cold, DH the same also with chesty cough. In the supermarket there is so much choice - mucus dissolve by, cough suppressant, decongestion medicines etc. This made me wonder if we are missing a trick by not taking advantage of all these symptoms relievers? The cold is going to take however long it needs to go, so why suffer more than perhaps we could? Are we just behind times in not taking any other medicines?

Curious to hear others experience with any additional medication - does it help?

Neti pot is my suggestion.

I didn't know what 'neti pot' was so I had to look it up.

I wish I hadn't, it's put me right off my soft cooked poached eggs.

mitogoshigg · 20/09/2024 18:32

None, time is the only healer.

That said if you run a temperature take ibuprofen, hot honey and lemon helps a sore throat etc but that's symptomatic not curative

luckylavender · 20/09/2024 18:33

For those of you who asked, there is lots of information. Here is an article - www.everydayhealth.com/lung-respiratory/too-many-people-are-using-neti-pots-and-vaporizers-unsafely/
Also those of us who suffer with nose bleeds should absolutely avoid.

Decongestant. It's a non-negotiable since I found out after years of agonising pain that a single Sudafed can take you from wanting to die due to nerve pain from a not particularly stuffy nose to 'Oh, I've got a bit of a cold'.

After that, paracetamol and an ice pack to chase any headache and swelling.

Growsomeballswoman · 20/09/2024 18:37

Honey, lemon and whisky. Hot water bottle and sleep

Sidebeforeself · 20/09/2024 18:45

Got a stinking cold right now! The past 4 days have been endless rounds of Robitussin, strepsils, water, hot tea. Tonight Im going for the brandy

Cheesecakecookie · 20/09/2024 18:47

For a cold ? Nothing much as I don’t find any of it works.

Hot toddy usually helps me sleep though !

TheReturnOfFeathersMcGraw · 20/09/2024 18:55

If you get rid of the symptoms youre more likely to do too much, run yourself down more and make the cold last longer

It might last longer…. But I won’t have the symptoms due to the medication 🤷🏻‍♀️.
I don’t have the option to do less, my child still requires round the clock care so I can’t just rest. So if I’m ill, I just have to crack on and relieve the symptoms as much as possible.

Lemsip during the day and liquid night nurse at night!

Lemonade2011 · 20/09/2024 19:06

lemsip lots of fluids and honey:lemon
just becuase thry have loads of drugs over there doesn’t mean they work or that they are any good, just a big market and lots of advertising

JBJ · 20/09/2024 19:06

The only thing I find helps congestion for me is the liquid Sudafed. That and hot water with honey, lemon, ginger and turmeric, plus paracetamol if needed.

unsync · 20/09/2024 19:07

Sinus wash with Sterimar - it's quite amazing how much mucus you can have in your sinuses. If I need to function properly, I find Day and Night Nurse capsules to be effective. I haven't needed them for ages though, so I assume they are still available.

Decongestant at night (nightnurse) if I can't breath to sleep. Maybe a paracetamol for a headache. Lemsip if it's a sore throat.

I get there are times and situations where resting isnt possible, absolutely. But in general if we're able to rest it's better for our bodies, surely

Sunnyside4 · 20/09/2024 19:10

Shop's own version of Strepsils for sore throat, which I normally get in first day or so. Sometimes I'll take honey and lemon, and occasionally a decongestant tablet before bed, but they don't make that much difference, so tend to avoid.

Echinacea - knocks a cold on the head really quickly.

I got some of this for a cold last year in the US. Worked like a miracle! Bought some more to bring home. CVS, Walgreens, Target etc will all sell it off the shelf.

Discovered decongestant late in life, marvellous stuff. You can breathe and sleep!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/09/2024 19:34

Those are pretty much paracetamol, something opioid, a (not as good as Sudafed) decongestant and expectorant for day and a sedating antihistamine at night - no wonder you like them - you're off your tits.
