Why are yoy asking? Do you think your child is getting enough sleep for them?

My summer born reception child is a year old (started school at 5) and has lights out around 7.15, I have no idea bow long it takes her to go to sleep and she wakes around 7 in the morning.

Really depends on the child, how much they're doing out of school, what time they wake up and whether they wake in the middle of the night.

Mine would have been flat out by 7. I thought 12 hours was about right for a 4 year old

I write this from my 4yo’s bedside as he wriggles around very much awake. I thought he’d be shattered after reception so insisted he should be in bed for 730… but he’s very much still awake. Seems to only need about 10/10.5 hours sleep a night

My DS started school this September. We have a similar routine. Shower at 6.30 then lights out around 7.30. He'll fall asleep around 7.30/8. Before he started school he wouldn't fall asleep until 9/10 🫣

My reception child just turned 5 last week. Upstairs at 6.30pm-6.40pm, stories and cuddles talk about her day. Usually asleep by 7.15pm. 7.30pm on a argumentative night! Wakes anywhere between 6.30am and 7.30am.

Itsdefinitelytimeforanamechange · 18/09/2024 20:16

Reception child here, asleep about 8.15, sometimes a bit later. Awake about 7am. Sadly they haven’t slept at 7pm since they were a baby!

InTheRainOnATrain · 18/09/2024 20:16

Sounds pretty normal, why are you asking?

My just turned 4 & just started reception is currently exhausted! Has been asleep 6.30/6.45 most nights, wakes somewhere between 6-7.15. She would be hideous if up any later right now! Normally would be 7/7.15

ISAR · 18/09/2024 20:30

Barny9339 · 18/09/2024 20:32

When My son was 4/5 his bedtime was 9 / 9.30 and now he's 6 (7 In feb) his bedtime is 10 and lights out 10.30. He's then awake at 7.30

Depends so much on the child.
DD1 asleep at 8/8:30, awake about 8/8:15.
DD2 asleep at 8:30/9, awake around 7/7:30.
Ds asleep by 7, awake 6-7.

SquigglePigs · 18/09/2024 20:40

It totally depends on your child. DD was generally asleep between 7.15 and 7.30 in early reception, and she was usually up about 7am, which worked for our routine. She had one classmate I know was out for the count by 6.30 for the first 6 months, and still sometimes had to be woken for school (and she was a Christmas baby so not a particularly young one). In contrast another of her friends was rarely asleep before 8 and that was enough for her.

If it works for you and DC then don't over think it.

handef · 18/09/2024 21:40

Depends on the child and cultural norms really. DD1 is Year 2 now but never fell asleep before 9pm at reception age, always up at 7am. She was never tired after school and would do after school activities most evenings, and other nights spend a couple of hours at the park or soft play, climbing and running around. A lot of kids at her school are in childcare until 6pm so if they were asleep by 7.30 they'd have barely any time with their family on a weeknight.
