Or return address…it was about a week back and I expected by now the recipient would have received a card re: insufficient postage. I am told they have received no such card. Anyone know if they will receive this letter at all? Thank you

I had this once, I received a notification from Royal Mail saying there was a letter for me to collect from the post office but I needed to pay the postage cost

PeanutPies · 18/09/2024 17:09

That’s what I assumed would happen- however I posted the letter last Wed and the recipient hasn’t received a card. Would it take this long?

Would it take this long? Yes. I've known it take a week for a first class letter to travel from one end of our town to the other. If it doesn't have a stamp it can't go through the automated system, so that will delay it further. They then have to get it to the addressee's local post office and generate a note to say that it needs collecting. I can easily see it taking a fortnight at least, if not longer.

I have had this , I received a card through the door to say I need to pay postage to receive my letter. I did not pay so didn't get letter.

Mindymomo · 18/09/2024 17:37

It would take this long where I live as they are very short of staff and we only get post 3 days per week.

Arlanymor · 18/09/2024 17:39

They wouldn’t have attempted delivery without a stamp so it’s gone into the pile for them to issue an insufficient postage cost card - which is a manual and not an automated process, so takes longer. No idea of telling how long it will take overall as it depends on the backlog.

DurhamDurham · 18/09/2024 17:43

They would have to pay the postage and a handling fee so unless it's something the recipient really wants they've won't bother going to collect it.

AutumnDragon · 18/09/2024 18:16

We rarely get post more than once a week. We had a postie turn up today with a parcel so I asked them about all our other post and was told that they are "not allowed" to take out letter post if there are parcels to be delivered.

So, a week without postage on the envelope is not very long. The recipient should get a card when they next get post that they can then either collect or pay online and have it delivered in the next lot of post

We had this when DD sent a 'large' size card with only a standard 1st class stamp. It took 2-3 weeks before we had the card to pay the excess. We were particularly concerned as it contained a voucher

PeanutPies · 18/09/2024 20:00

thank you for your responses- so they would receive it but timeline is the issue. Silly me - was trying to juggle tasks and completely forgot that I didn’t include a stamp

The mail is chronically late now, a week is normal here now even with a first class stamp. Don't trust it any more TBH.
