We attended a funeral last week.. Turkey and cranberry triangle sandwiches... Ham and mustard cut the same..
Coronation chicken vol au vonts (?)
Garlic bread and wedges with choice of dips..
Quiche.
And bowls of crisps..
Was all washed down with huge pots of tea. Was very lovely tbh.

All of the above plus couple of salads, a cheese board and something veggie plus cake.

Scones, jam and cream (in that order) all disappeared at close family members funeral.

But don't stress about it. Just try to get the amount of food right (difficult). No one really recalls what there was, more of a did they their tummies.

I had DH funeral recently and wake was nothing posh, just held in a nice pub. The buffet was simple and the warm food went first (and quickly) - cod bites, spicy chicken nuggets, Moroccan vegetable samosas and spring rolls, Spanish prawn pil pil. The cold food was lovely but people definitely homed in on the warm stuff.

Something to nibble while talking, and keep you going on a long day.

I’d probably stick to forkable food, or finger food.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 18/09/2024 16:36

Depends on the time of day and whether it's a stand up mingling affair or proper sit down

StarSlinger · 18/09/2024 16:37

I think just your standard buffet fare really. Platters of sandwiches, mini sausage rolls, quiche, salad bowl, cheese and crackers, crisps. A few slices of different cake.

I wouldn't go too fancy.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 18/09/2024 16:37

We recently had my uncles memorial and we had the most amazing pizzas and everyone was super happy with them, worked really well.

Dearg · 18/09/2024 16:39

Depends on what time of day , and where in the country you are.
I am in NE Scotland, and a funeral tea is nothing without a sausage roll.

Most recent I was at was a selection of sandwiches including veggie; sausage rolls - hot of course-mini quiches , and a selection of shortbread and Tunnocks wafers.

Tea, coffee, and a drink from the bar/ soft drink.

Some serve soup if around lunchtime- more often in winter months.

We had my dads at a carvery.... no waste and a decent meal. They sectioned off a private area.

FattipuffToThinnifer · 18/09/2024 16:59

Just ask them what’s popular and goes down well for the time of day!

They’ll be experienced with it all and know what to suggest, if you let them know you want either light nibbles or a full meal etc

MrsCarson · 18/09/2024 17:01

I'm in Wales and there's always Bara Brith thinly sliced with butter on.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 18/09/2024 17:04

My part of Scotland- it's a steak pie (puff pastry), ham sandwiches, egg sandwiches.

Bjorkdidit · 18/09/2024 17:06

Caterers usually have a standard offering so you don't really have to tell them what to provide. They might want to know if there's any significant dietary requirements, for example if the family is Jewish, obviously they won't include any pork. They might have different price points or food for different times of day too, eg is it supposed to be lunch for people or more afternoon tea?

Spareincoming · 18/09/2024 17:09

Thanks all; great suggestions there - the caterer said she’d like some ideas from the family and I went blank!

Assorted sandwiches (make sure you have veggie ones on a separate plate), and some cakes usually. Tea and coffee provided and a bar for people to buy any other drinks
