Do you enjoy cooking?

Good morning! Do you guys enjoy cooking for yourself/family? As a married woman with kids I sometimes struggle to take this particular duty seriously and it sometimes makes me feel like I’m letting my kids/husband down but sometimes I just can’t be bothered 😭 and it’s not even that I can’t cook, it’s more like, I simply don’t want to😭😭 it’s a bit of a conundrum in that you love your family and you want them to have healthy, nutritious food each day but the effort that goes into it…and don’t even get me started on the cleaning/laundry…
also, do your partners do more of the cooking? Or is it those traditional households where it’s only the woman?

DH does all the cooking.

AnchorWHAT · 17/09/2024 08:51

i mainly do the cooking as I enjoy it….. when I am organised and have a food plan. What I don't enjoy is trying to think of something for dinner every day if i haven't planned. When thats the case DH and DS will usually cook instead. We are all good cooks and share it around a bit.

Beezknees · 17/09/2024 08:53

I'm a single parent so do the cooking. I don't mind it actually.

If I was married and we were both working full time jobs I'd expect DH to do 50% of all cooking and housework.

I do all the cooking. I don't enjoy it but reading scary articles about what's in our foods urges me to cook.
In all seriousness though, I cook everything from scratch because I have the time (I work part-time) and because I have an auto immune disease which is exacerbated with processed stuff. I use the GAPS diet for the entire family (similar to the AIP/SCD diet).
I plan a menu every weekend after looking at flyers and what's on sale. Sometimes, I make a double portion and freeze it so I can get it out when I am feeling lazy.
On a weekly basis, I make sourdough bread (two loaves), broth (bone broth), grilled vegetables (alternative to salads and I freeze these) and I marinate some meats when I just want to throw something on the grill and use my grilled veggies with those. I make yogurt and kefir every 3-4 days. Every few months, I make kimchi and sauerkraut which lasts us about 3 months.
The key is to get the meal planning done. I used to cook on the weekends and freeze but I can't be bothered with that now. I prefer the double portion cooking which requires the same effort.

devildeepbluesea · 17/09/2024 09:15

I’m single and have a full time full-on job. I do wfh but that’s academic- I rarely get time to throw anything in the slow cooker.

I do cook from scratch and use very few packets, sauces - but am quite happy to get pizza or ready meals when I CBA

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 17/09/2024 09:18

I enjoy cooking but it's not my sole responsibility. My DH is just as responsible for cooking and providing good healthy meals as I am.

This is not all on you.

Cobblersorchard · 17/09/2024 09:24

My DH does most of it, he’s the better cook. I can cook ok, but it’s not a passion. I love eating more.

DD eats at school mostly so there’s not many meals as a family each week- just Sat-Mon when we are all together at the same time. I eat at the office twice a week so just have a late snack when I get in. DD gets a hot lunch and usually has snacky meals in the evening.

I don’t know many women in real life that cook a lot, it’s mostly shared. On mumsnet there seems to be more wife-slaves!

OMG!! I'm soo happy to see this post 🤣 I thought it was just me who hates cooking!

Honestly this post is me, minus the husband/partner. I have 4 children and I'm on my own and I just feel cooking is such a boring tedious chore, figuring out what to cook then cooking it 😩 I do too feel guilty because I would love to enjoy cooking so I could make more appetising meals but I just don't have the energy and I find it soo blooming boring 🤦🏼‍♀️

Spomb · 17/09/2024 09:39

I really enjoy it. It’s the chore that doesn’t feel like a chore and I get lots of credit for it and never have to clean up after!

Are your children able to help? Mine help a lot. It also keeps them out of mischief. They enjoy cooking way more than I do. They like to watch reruns of cooking competitions etc. I still dislike cooking shows. I don't know where they got the cooking bug from. DH doesn't cook at all. He comes from a very traditional family but his mother didn't cook either. They had a lot of TV dinners.
I cook out of a health necessity.

I don't think it is necessary to insult other women's choices. We can keep going all day long if that's the case.
Single women vs married
Cook vs don't cook
Work vs stay at home
.....you get my drift?

GameOfJones · 17/09/2024 11:35

I'm the cook in our house, DH does all of the washing up so he definitely pulls his weight.

I do enjoy it, but don't tend to cook anything too involved. A lot of our meals are very simple. Pasta dishes, stir fries, risotto etc. I cook a lot from scratch but am also happy to use ready made packets/sauces if they save time.

I work part time so on the days that I'm at home I will cook more from scratch whereas on working days I'm happy doing jacket potatoes, or quesadillas or something quick.

It's not usually a choice though. It's usually because DH can't be arsed.

Same here! I love cooking 90% of the time and looking through cookbooks/online and making different meals. Sometimes at the end of the week I feel like I need a break though, so perhaps DH will do something or we might get something to just put in the oven. I work full time and have 2 teenagers but I get home a bit earlier than DH so it makes sense for me to start the cooking. DH is also a good cook though if he does do it. DD also helps out by baking cakes and the odd meal or two.
DH and the kids clear up so it's a win win for me.
Also get lots of credit for it, even from the DCs!

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/09/2024 11:45

God no. I’m currently approaching the end of a week-long self-catering UK break with a friend who simply loves baking and cooking. We’ve done a lot of both. I am at the end of my tether. Friend has had a shit year so I’ve essentially indulged it for sake of being a good friend but my word, it’s tedious. I cannot conceive why anyone would want to spend so much time and money and mess up the kitchen over and over.

Adore friend, but have noticed they have definitely been less keen to join me cycling and running (hobbies I enjoy) this week than I have to be on sous chef duty!

At home DH does all the cooking, and if he’s away then the Instant Pot is my friend, along with ready prepped cooked meats and salads.

How would you split it?

DataColour · 17/09/2024 11:51

@ComtesseDeSpair If I was on holiday with you, I'd be prioritising the running and cycling as I enjoy that too and would probably want to cook less elaborate meals when on holiday! Although would still want to eat nice food and then burn it off with lots of exercise, my favourite kind of holiday!

DiscoBeat · 17/09/2024 11:53

I love it! I find it relaxing and I really like experimenting with different dishes. We usually discuss the next week's meal plan on a Sunday night at dinner and the teens get involved with the cooking occasionally. DH offers to cook but doesn't enjoy it like I do and he has things around the house that he likes but I don't so it works out well.
