If your DC is in Sixth Form....

Hi,

My DD has just started year 13 and her new timetable is a bit awkward, in that she has a couple of days where her lessons don't start until late morning/afternoon.

Is your DC allowed to go in later, I.e miss registration and go straight to their lessons?

DD insisted that her classmates don't bother going in for registration if they don't start until later and there are often only half the form there, but I just checked attendance and those days have been marked as late.

If this was an issue, wouldn't they have told DD?

Just wondered what the norm was.

TIA

I have a DD in year 13. Her free periods tend to be in an afternoon, so she comes home at lunchtime 2 days a week to study here. Her friends come in late if they are on the opposite schedule BUT only those who are given permission can, not all. Those with proven record of motivated self-study only.

mumonthehill · 16/09/2024 14:06

Ds year 13 and they have to be in for morning registration but from October half term if they do not have morning lessons they do not need to go in. He has 1 Friday a fortnight with no lessons and he can stay at home. If he finishes lessons early then he can leave.

mondaytosunday · 16/09/2024 14:07

My DD had this but they still had to be in school for registration at 8.20 prompt (they had an electric fob to get in the sixth form door so it was recoded)!
If she had a study period (or two) before her first class she did just that: studied. In fact she had enough that for most of the year she did the bulk of her A level work at school, often staying til 6pm, as she found home a distraction.

Mine has just started year 12 and he can go in for the first lesson and leave after the last lesson on his timetable. What he can't do is leave and then come back so once in school they stay until the end of their lessons even if they have study periods.

She gets a late but doesn’t care. To be honest, as long as she’s working, neither do I. But I have a go at getting get there out of duty anyway.

Experience says my enthusiasm for attempting this dies out after about a month. As does school’s interest in whether she’s in form for 10 minutes before a double lesson off.

Stirmish · 16/09/2024 14:44

Mine don't have a morning registration they go in at the time of their first lesson and register separately with each lesson

Stirmish · 16/09/2024 14:46

My DD would flat out refuse to go in early just for a pointless registration to then hang around for hours before her first proper lesson

Mine have form time as a timetabled lesson once a week.

MuseumGardens · 16/09/2024 14:52

Dd1 used to be able to go in for first lesson but a new head of sixth form took over and dd2 has to go to registration each morning first thing

Stirmish · 16/09/2024 15:02

I think 6th forms that are attached to a secondary school still have these stricter school rules

Whereas a 6th form college not attached to a secondary school is more flexible and allows pupils to be more independent and learn to manage their own time effectively

Which is why students need to choose their 6th form carefully

Tbskejue · 16/09/2024 15:04

What are the school expectations? Ours is very clear that in year 13 they have to be in 9-3; other sixth forms they don’t though I know.

SomersetBrie · 16/09/2024 15:06

Mine had to be in for registration every morning at 850 and only had one 9 am lesson the whole week. This was his school's Sixth Form.
It was a total nightmare getting him to go in and he received a detention each time he was late.
He's at Sixth Form college now and they are much more relaxed.

TeenToTwenties · 16/09/2024 15:06

My DD is at college. She only has to be there for actual lessons. Attendance is worked out on a per lesson basis.

This is confusing

The post is about 6th form only

LaerealSilverhand · 16/09/2024 15:09

They only have to be there for the lessons and can leave premises during free periods, lunch etc. It's a sixth form college though (no school sixth forms here, unless you go private).

sproutsandparsnips · 16/09/2024 15:10

Yes DS is at 6th form college (no other options locally). He only needs to be in for his lectures and tutorials and I am alerted if he is not there but no other sanctions. In fairness he goes in whenever the option is there even if not compulsory.

In what way it is confusing?
I've talked about Sixth Form at a school and Sixth Form college.
Was I only supposed to talk about Sixth Form at a school?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 16/09/2024 15:13

DS2 has just stated year 12 at school sixth form. They have made it very clear that they must be in for registration at 8.30. They have assemblies, thought of the week, support younger pupils which can help towards Welsh Bacc etc in that time.

They can leave if they have free lessons but must sign in and out.

Going to college for KS5 as ds1 did gives a lot more freedom.

Bramshott · 16/09/2024 15:28

It will totally depend on the type of setting your DC is in. DD2 is at a college, and they just go in for the lessons on their timetable - they take a register at each lesson.

mitogoshigg · 16/09/2024 15:29

No registration for my dd, you swipe in on arrival which can be any time

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 16/09/2024 15:42

DD is in college so they don't have registration, just turn up to lessons.

But remembering way back to the distant past to when I was in sixth form, if you had lessons in the morning then you had to be there for morning registration, and ditto for afternoon registration. Was a pain in the arse when you didn't have a lesson till 11am.

redskydarknight · 16/09/2024 15:49

They have to register for every lesson, and also tutor time (in the middle of the day), but only have to go in for lessons and can arrive/leave as it fits with the timetable.

My DC both had part time jobs that were nominally overlapping with school time but during time they actually didn't have lessons. It's also common for students to use school time (but not lesson time) to have driving lessons.

Sixth form attached to a school to debunk that theory!

MermaidEyes · 16/09/2024 15:49

My dc just go in ready for whatever time their first lesson is, ie 9am or 1.30 after lunch. I'm assuming registration is just taken at the start of lessons.

MiseryIn · 16/09/2024 15:50

Mine can come and go as she pleases. No registration as such.

She has no lessons on one day and doesn't have to go in.

Much like university.

Just to add school sixth form.

thismummydrinksgin · 16/09/2024 15:55

Mine has to be there all the time, no option to go in late or finish early
