Quick and easy way to sew on cubs badges

I really struggle with sewing, especially through those thick badges due to my dodgy thumbs/wrists. I've been using fabric glue these last few months but it's rubbish and they are now falling off.

I need to transfer all of DSs badges, plus some new ones to a new jumper and no idea how to do this without crippling my wrists.

I've seen mini sewing machines but with the badges needing to go on the sleeves this is no good.

Help please!

I pay a local tailor to sew on DS's - £2 per badge. Luckily, DS isn't very into getting badges.

And he does a great job compared to ours.

HT2 fabric glue by Gutermann- it's amazing and whatever fabric I use it for it never, ever unsticks itself.

Is there anyone at cubs that does it? There's someone at ours who does it as part of volunteering, with a donation going to the scouts.

anxietyaardvark · 15/09/2024 18:48

Our local dry cleaners does it.

UserNameOfShame · 15/09/2024 18:55

Not sure I can afford to pay someone, there are at least 20 sleeve badges plus all the other ones that need removing and re attaching.

The hut is desperately short of volunteers, we have to do a parent rota as it is. I doubt they have a badge sewer.

I was hoping for some nifty device someone could recommend.

May need to try that glue, I think it's different to the one I've tried.

Badge glue !

Longhotsummers · 15/09/2024 18:56

Badge glue is what you want!

elozabet · 15/09/2024 18:57

Washes fine with badge glue.

I can't be dealing with sewing as as a guide leader this might be blasphemous, I can wholeheartedly recommend just glueing them on

What about something like wonderweb?

Serriadh · 15/09/2024 19:00

The trick is not to try to put the needle through the whole badge. Try to catch it through the stitching round the edge, then through the soft jumper, then up back through the stitching. You need to do small stitches in a colour that matches the badge edging but each stitch is very easy and should be a bit kinder to thumbs/hands.

Or use glue!

TickingAlongNicely · 15/09/2024 19:01

Stick a piece of card, a thin book or water bottle up the sleeve. The harder surface behind stops you seeing the sleeve together and makes the needle go through easier.

(We advise against the badge glue as you can't pass on or sell the jumper after they finish. Also fiddling cubs manage to pull them off! But its personal choice)

Not scouts but my DC scrolls on blazers from school.

Used fabric glue on every single one. After a little while if the corners started to lift, they got a bit more glue.

The more organised parents sent them to the dry cleaners to be done. I am not that organised parent. (If they went on slightly skew, we went with ah well 😊)

Teach your child how to do it!

I did DS Cubs ones, showed him how to do Scouts ones he did those and does Explorer ones

Nourishinghandcream · 15/09/2024 19:11

Is there not a sewing badge so DS can do it himself?

InfoSecInTheCity · 15/09/2024 19:15

What @Serriadh and @TickingAlongNicely say.

I use a Pringles tube in the sleeve, it's exactly the right size, use a hair bobble round the wrist to keep the tube in place. Then just catch the stitching round the edges of the badge rather than pushing the needle through the thick badge.
