Living near a primary school / noise from

The OH is a bit apprehensive re: noise, but I am not convinced it will be dreadful. Just 220 pupils. Back of school and probably playground 100m away. Playing field behind the house.

I imagine noise is 8:30-3:30 (at break time) and 13 weeks are holiday. It’s in a little village.

For context, we currently live in a farm that regularly wakes us up at 6am and he is always run ragged with exhaustion.

We don’t hate kids! We just know they can be very screechy as he lived opposite a school some time ago and it reverberated into his 5th floor flat (and the school kept them in all summer so the play noise was ALL day! In Germany).

Can I have your thoughts please? What time is morning break usually? Maybe we can listen from nearby.

Playground and sports day noise are the best noise.

It's idiot parents parking and idling their engines that's the problem.

I live right next to a primary school. I’m a teacher so am rarely home during school hours but there have been times I’ve been working from home, off sick or where the holidays haven’t quite matched up and I’ve been off when the school is open. Usually a little bit of noise about 8:30-45 when the kids are waiting to go in, again at 10:30-11:00 for morning break and then at around 12:30-13:00 for lunch, mostly kids laughing and shouting but not screeching. Only noticeable in summer when windows are open or if in garden, wouldn’t hear anything in winter. Unless you’re very very noise sensitive I can’t think it would be an issue.

He IS. But I think there's a very big difference between

Cars on gravel and slamming car doors all day long from early (previous home)

Tractors thumping across speedbumps with screeching brakes from 6am and sometimes all night long

Machinery that sounds like a helicopter waking you up at 6am - violently, because it's so bloody loud

VERSUS

Happy kids having fun and squealing with laughter/playing

Some of those are nuisances and some will probably just uplift your spirits. Who can resent the sound of kids having fun? It will just make you smile, surely? Kids having uncontrollable giggles certainly makes the pair of us laugh :)

But, others have posted points about discos, weekend activities and renting out fields that would be a different type of noise (more of an annoyance, if repeatedly), so I think those are what we have to investigate.

(the parking really, really isn't a concern, because we almost never have to leave the house before 7pm so it doesn't even matter if we get stuck in the cul de sac)

I live beside a school, my bedroom window overlooks a yard with a narrow road between us. There is nothing nicer than the sound of the children playing. Just last week I saw all the little ones starting off taking photos on the way in and it made me smile. But then i love kids and have a busy house so maybe it's different. I never noticed cars or traffic making much noise as it's a time we are all up anyway. Summer camps run for some of the summer so I guess that is noisy but it's constant background noise of a lot of kids not sudden bangs like a building site.

I'll never forget the silence during lockdown, it was awful and scary.

walk away - started off ok - then holiday clubs - now renting it out to football teams on saturdays and sundays. halls are available every week end - then they wanted to build a MUGA because of the wet fields - but they are happy to rent the wet fields out. at week ends. i expect we will have the halls rent out at week ends soon they are available - probably to church groups.

Schools are renting out their premises more and more so that 8.30 to 3.30pm may increase to 7am to 6.30 pm if they allow breakfast, holiday and after school clubs.

Not all children's playing noise is nice when you get the high pitched squealing or repetitive ball bouncing. Plus the cars parked up with engines idling and doors slamming. And parking in stupid places of course!

I've lived next to a school twice, the noise has never been a problem. Parking however and obstruction at certain times a massive problem which only exacerbated year on year. Also the playing field attracted teenagers and anti social behaviour out of school hours ,for that reason I wouldn't live close to a school again.

I lived near a school and it was dreadful - the noise was regular but very irritating (no cute, twee childrens' giggles, it was all velociraptor screeching) and the parents' parking was the bane of everyone's lives. Residents were constantly being blocked in and some parents were even using my and other people's drives at one point - if you accosted them, they'd just give you abuse.

I hated living there.

But it was a city and not rural, so maybe that makes a difference!

Thanks for all your replies and even your recent ones, folks.

As it turns out, the house was in a dreadful condition, the landlord clearly didn't care about looking after it at all, so it was a complete non-starter.

However, it's given us real food for thought for any future homes that may come up near schools - both the positives and the negatives.

I really appreciate you all sharing your experiences. I feel much better informed now.

Noise won't be non stop but.... the parking will eventually become a nuisance.
I lived next to primary school years ago, in end terrace house. Our right fence was bordering with the school field. Regularly, group of children would come up to the fence and throw things (sticks and small stones) at our dog ( we often had garden door open a lot in the summer so the dog could come and go as he pleased). Ended up complaining to the school... will never again live next to the school 😑
