What can I do to alleviate the fact that I stayed at a job for less than a 1 year?

Well don't lie obviously. What is the real reason? Just say it wasn't the right fit, or not what you expected?

FaiIureToLunch · 13/09/2024 20:57

Invent a baby?!

DaftyLass · 13/09/2024 20:58

But is it the truth?
If it didn't work out, say so, it's not as bad as lying

CoastalCalm · 13/09/2024 20:58

Say it was a fixed contract

AlisonDonut · 13/09/2024 20:58

Just tell the truth?

ManhattanPopcorn · 13/09/2024 21:00

You don't need to alleviate it. It's ok to leave a job.

invisiblecat · 13/09/2024 21:00

Why did you leave?

The real reason, I mean.

No shame in it but it’s nobody’s business. If you want to be truthful say it didn’t work out, or if you want to max your chances of next job and jobs in your sector are often temporary contracts then saying it was a fixed term post might work.

would a redundancy also work?

I had a six month blip and said it was a fixed term contract.

If you weren't there for two years you are not entitled to redundancy, you would be laid off

I had fantastic advice in a similar situation ( toxic work place with my department being particularly badly affected): a highly experienced and very wise colleague knew how unhappy I was and advised me to 'get out now as your previous reference (which was excellent, and from a workplace I had been in for nearly 2 decades) will still be up to date and reflect who you are'. I took her advice and landed a higher paid job in a much better workplace within a few weeks.

11 of us left that year; I owe her an awful lot as I would have felt leaving in under a year would have suggested I was flaky had she not given me the courage to put my well-being before my misguided career concerns. I simply said in interview that my philosophy didn't align with my previous employer and, as I take my professionalism very seriously, I felt I was better off moving to a workplace which held similar values and where I knew I could be whole heartedly committed to what I was doing and the organisation I would be doing it in.

Hope that helps. Life is short. Don't stay miserable.

VictoryOrDeath · 13/09/2024 21:12

I wouldn't lie.

I've read good wording for this before - something about having some health issues, so you took some time out to focus on your wellbeing, and these have now resolved. Something like that anyway.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 13/09/2024 21:12

Just tell the truth unless you think HR at the previous job will match your lie.

I have two 'short' stints on my CV, 13 months and 9 months. I've never even been asked why I left either, let alone needed to lie. Job hopping is totally normal now.

JC03745 · 13/09/2024 21:17

Are you hoping to have a reference from this company? If so, then I wouldn't lie! They might ask them why you left.

I'd just say it wasn't as expected, you were looking for a change of role into XYZ or your own circumstances changed.
