Laminate flooring in 1st floor flat?

I would love laminate flooring in my lounge but I'm in a first floor flat. That's a complete no no isn't it? Even with rugs?

It depends on what underlay you use, if you put down a good one of the right thickness it can work.

You'd need to spend a lot (a disproportionate amount) on the underlay so that foot fall noise etc doesn't get amplified.

Unless you want to make your downstairs neighbours lives miserable then no.

You would be a monster to do this and inviting trouble in the form of unhappy downstairs neighbours.

i say this as someone who lived in a 1st floor flat and the fuckers upstairs put in laminate

It is likely in the terms of your lease that you are not allowed to do this. If someone complains about the noise then you will have to pay to replace it

There are some really good vinyl "look alikes" which would be ok as they have a spongy backing and create less noise.

I have it in my third floor flat but it's a council flat. The kitchen/living room/dining room is all one open space so the whole floor is laminate rather than carpet to minimise stains. I think everything is well insulated though and the people below can't hear me.

We have LVT with really really good underlay upstairs and the noise was worse with carpet.
