Son has been scammed

Ds 20 bought some tickets to a gig from someone online for £90. He told me about it afterwards as he thought he had been scammed. It was pretty obvious to me that he was scammed so I said he needed to learn from the experience and let it go. He tried to get the money back from the bank but couldn't (which I thought would be the case). Would you just leave it? Should he report it to Action Fraud and is there anything he should do to protect himself in future, apart from not buying anything online from random people!

Can you suggest he gets you or a friend to sense check future purchases if they might be dodgy? I’ve suggested this to my elderly dad.

Good idea, I would have told him not to do it. I think he knew it was risky but the pull to get tickets to his favourite band took over! Lesson learnt the hard way I guess

Same happened to DD. I told her to make sure the tickets actually existed and to check the persons profile on SM, which she did but then still never got the tickets. I thought it looked suss but shes 19 and its her money
She reported to her bank and Action Fraud but they couldn't do anything, although her bank said they had requested a refund from the other persons bank.
Pay pay (not F&F one) is the only protection in these cases

Where did he ‘buy’ them from?

Abbylikeswine · 12/09/2024 10:43

Rule 1 is don't buy tickets off facebook

Mmhmmn · 12/09/2024 10:45

He just needs to learn the lesson really.
Not to buy anything from a person online / on social media.
That will protect him in future.

BorryMum · 12/09/2024 10:57

He bought them from someone on Reddit which he knew was a bad idea. They tried to get £30 more out of him 'to change the names on the tickets' so they it must be something they do regularly. I will get him to block them and hope he isn't on some list of people to scam in the future

It's a good lesson to learn.

Don't ever buy tickets on Facebook, reddit, any kind of social media.

DD15 got scammed over Taylor Swift tickets. We did warn her that if something looks too good to be true, it very likely is. DH is still trying to negotiate with the credit card company.

@Abby likes wine it is a good lesson. He still
lives at home and apart from being a bit short of cash this month there is not too much wrong. Better he learns now than later on so he ends up in debt.

Sounds like loads of them fall for it. I'm very cautious so it hasn't happened to me but I wanted to check if there was anything obvious I should tell him. Sounds like I have given him the right advice, sorry to hear some of you have had this happen to your kids too
