How do you cheer yourself up when you’re feeling a bit deflated

Feel a bit meh today, definitely hormonal and on a diet which doesn’t help. Had a bit of a crap day work wise and generally feeling a bit sad at the state of the world, life hasn’t exactly gone to plan the last few years. Nothing really bad but just a bit down.

How do you cheer yourself up a bit? Other than going to sit in the bath in a bit I’m out of ideas.

I find buying a new book usually cheers me up. Or going for a walk with headphones on and music blaring. Or watching something funny on Netflix etc, I find watching an old favourite is quite soothing and a way to escape life's gloom!

A walk
Bath
Candle
Coffee with a friend

Might try and find a comedy, have the house to myself for the next hour.

I go for a run - and if I’m have a particularly shitty day I go for a long hard uphill run followed by a barely warm shower
Or I’ll clean out a cupboard or two - cleaning and chucking stuff out is also very therapeutic

Ilovelurchers · 11/09/2024 18:26

Reading something escapist can help?

Making myself do something useful, like the washing up, or sorting a drawer or something - something that occupies enough of my mind to stop me ruminating.

Planning something nice with a friend or family member - arranging a meet up, or booking theatre tickets, something like that......

I also do a bit of on-line Xmas shopping - early as it is, I love buying things for other people......

For me it’s spending time outdoors exercising. If I can combine this with a chat with a good friend even better, like a hike or bike ride with a good friend

Edited

I used to run a lot, it really helped lift my mood. Have a bit of a bad back at the moment but been considering starting again.

Gym

familyissues12345 · 11/09/2024 18:28

I love a nice hot bath, one of those weird face sheet things. That sort of thing.

I'd probably break the diet slightly too, treat myself to something a little naughty and start again tomorrow. Doesn't have to be much!

Try walking combined with gentle stretches, I’m sure it’ll help your back or maybe go on a bike ride or even a swim - our local pool is open until 9pm

TinselAngel · 11/09/2024 18:30

Carbs.

Very hot shower complete with hair wash and deep condition. Literally feels like I’m washing it all away and can view the world afresh.

tobee · 11/09/2024 19:25

Sadly it does tend to be nice food for me.

hexsnidgett · 11/09/2024 19:31

Very loud shouty sweary music, singing along, in the car is best.Grin

DustyMaiden · 11/09/2024 19:32

Dance or do karaoke on you tube.

abracadabra1980 · 11/09/2024 19:48

Dog walk followed by a glass of wine
(after 4pm) or a cup of tea/latte in the morning. Also a magazine cheers me up no end.

GoodVibesHere · 11/09/2024 20:06

It's chocolate for me.

RickiRaccoon · 11/09/2024 20:40

Depending on time of day/year and what I can manage: walk, stroll around garden to inspect the flowers, can or bottle of drink, alcoholic drink, cuddle with dog, cuddle with toddler, cuddle with husband, movie, retail therapy (for something not too expensive: socks, candle).

FencePainting · 11/09/2024 20:45

I listen to music
Put a sitcom on..at the moment it's My Wife and Kids or The Upshaws
Sit in the garden if the weather is good
Put a wax melt on and have some chocolate

AtYourOwnRisk · 11/09/2024 20:50

Depends on the exact type of low. Walking on the beach always helps, or getting my hands in the earth, or phoning a friend and wailing, or stomping along the river listening to Chumbawumba‘s ‘I get knocked down’. Or breadmaking (punching dough is very therapeutic) or drink.

Lovelyview · 11/09/2024 20:57

Message a friend you haven't heard from for a while. A slightly dumb one which works for me is put your face into a massive smile - teeth showing - for at least 20 seconds.

CantDecideAUsename · 11/09/2024 21:40

There’s some really lovely ideas here. I ended up with a bath and alcohol free gin and I’m getting an early night. Food and alcohol are my usual things, which is probably why I need the diet.
Will definitely be putting on the music at work tomorrow, I WFH so can put on whatever I want!
