It’s something which seems to be dying out - very seasonal . And presumably U.K. only .

No

PollyannaWhittier · 12/09/2024 07:49

From 'very seasonal' and 'dying out' I'm guessing conkers, but we never used that phrase. Maybe a regional thing ?

BananaGrapeMelon · 12/09/2024 07:53

No, I'm 50 and I don't know this phrase from my own childhood or my DC's.

Procrastinates · 12/09/2024 07:57

I'm guessing from your description you mean conkers but I've never heard the phrase. I suspect it's probably a regional thing and not well used term.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 12/09/2024 07:58

Never heard of it, although ‘seasonal’ implies conkers

DappledThings · 12/09/2024 08:10

No. We used to play the game where you have a fixed point and everyone has to try and run to it before getting caught Acky 123 but assuming "seasonal" means it isn't that.

Habbit · 12/09/2024 08:31

Never heard of it. I grew up in SE England.

Puzzlemad · 12/09/2024 08:41

Never heard it. But it is conker season near enough. I miss going to the park and seeing kids throwing sticks in the trees to get the best conkers, these days it's more common to see conkers rotting round here.

YouveGotAFastCar · 12/09/2024 08:42

I wouldn’t have said conkers were dying out. There’s hoardes of kids around all the conker trees here as soon as they start falling. The conkers are gone in no time!

wonderingwhatsnext · 12/09/2024 08:42

No.

HappilyContentTheseDays · 12/09/2024 08:43

Absolutely no idea, never heard it before.

TheFlis · 12/09/2024 08:45

Nope, never heard that.

AgainstRegulations · 12/09/2024 08:45

Not a clue.

MissMuffetisin · 12/09/2024 14:35

Yep, it’s Conkers and we used to call it out when the strings got tangled - first one to shout it won. I grew up in Birmingham, perhaps it was a brummie thing ! Conkers where I live now are all over the floor, untouched, so I presume it’s not played here now😟. It was a nice link to a time when we were all more in touch with the seasons and outdoors especially children. Although the relatives who had cars damaged by kids throwing sticks into the trees on the road side to get cookers would probably be happy to see the tradition die out !
