Can't stop burping - it's constant. Any suggestions before I go mad???

At the moment it's every few seconds. I literally can't stop. Even woke up this morning burping. It's all evening, every evening at the moment. Rennies and Boots indigestion tablets do nothing. I'd resolved to eat nothing today in case it was eating that triggered it but then I woke up after 12 hours of no food and it was happening already.

There's no pain with it, and no heartburn. Just unrelenting wind. Wtf?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this might be and what I can do?

I eat slowly, don't think I swallow too much air, When I say every few seconds, I'm not exaggerating.

Have you eaten anything unusual, drunk alcohol, smoked/vaped or had a lot of stress lately? It may be gastritis. You can get OTC 20mg esomeprazole in supermarkets and pharmacies, but they take a few days to kick in. In the meantime, does liquid Gaviscon help?

But obviously, if it persists, see your GP! You're not supposed to take Gaviscon etc all the time, just for short term relief.

You need to do an elimination diet and reintroduce foods one at a time to find the culprit.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 11/09/2024 14:40

@Compash - I don't drink any alcohol at all, ever, and I've never smoked or vaped. My diet is the same as it's always been (I like routine!). Stress, yes, definitely that, but I've never experienced the burping this bad at previous stressful times.

I haven't tried liquid gaviscon, though have tried the chewable tablets (useless) so may try the liquid, thank you.

Didn't know you could get the omepraozle OTC, will have a look. My mum had that years ago. She was always burping and it used to really annoy me! Karma....

Will make an appointment if it persists - god, I hope not, this is mental. Who knew one person could hold so much wind??

Oh bless you... I find the Gaviscon better than the pills (but don't take in the same hour or two as taking any pills, it stops their absorption).

Also worth a try may be a half teaspoon of bicarb in water - that'll REALLY get the wind up in one go! Also reduces acid.

Compash · 11/09/2024 14:49

I meant Gaviscon liquid better than pills.

The pills may be labelled something like 'Heartburn and Acid Reflux Control', but will also say 20mg esomeprazole. Nexium is a brand name one, but you can get Boots or supermarket own, it's the same thing.

I think you have silent reflux, op. Burping is a symptom. If you eat/drink anything peppermint, you need to stop.

This is true, my husband had this, omeprazol and then pantoprazol solved it.

Could be a hiatus hernia. Eliminating and reintroducinv foods might help. If it continues see a GP

I’d get tested for H pylori.

Dont take a PPI until you’ve at least asked a doctor about it.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 11/09/2024 15:24

@Compash - will get some of the tablets today. Think I'd rather try them first. Nexium rings a bell.

@Aquamarine1029 - interesting. Will look into this. Sometimes it's not so silent!! It's a good thing I live alone...

@NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre - will look into that too, thanks.
