Don't be ignorant, or you will lose Netflix

gardenmusic · 11/09/2024 08:59

I have just had an e-mail from 'a trusted sender' (it says so, so it must be true)

Apparently my payment for Netflix has not gone through, so my membership cannot be renewed, and I must send them my bank details!
They are quite cross with me - 'In case of ignorance, my account will be terminated'.
I have never had Netflix, they seem quite harsh!

I hate these emails. I see through them easily but my mum who is not computer savvy at all fall for them. Lost money to them previously.

We have now come to an agreement that I have access to her email and remove anything untoward, so she can read her genuine emails in peace.

It still worries me though as she is an easy target.

PfishFood · 11/09/2024 11:43

I'm sure I opened myself up to more of these dodgy emails once as (I realise now, foolishly) I'd clicked on a link that took me to a screen that looked just like my bank login screen.

Realising it was a scam I filled in all the boxes with nonsense and typed the "password" "doyouthinkimfuckingstupid?"

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 11/09/2024 11:49

No Nigerian Tupperware here, just some threats of debt collectors for unpaid road tolls from a city I've never been to. Some of the newer scams lacks the big fear factor. It used to be threats of arrest for tax fraud and unpaid debts, which you could make disappear by paying an eye watering sum immediately over the phone. Somehow Netflix cancellation doesn't quiet measure up.

I've won a couple of ninja foodies, a milk frother and a DeWalt EXTREME drill over the last couple of days. I'm very lucky, especially as I haven't even ENTERED these competitions!

Happily they seem to have forgotten they have a few videos of me watching porn now, maybe they realised I was snorting at tiktok videos rather than snorting in the throes of porn passion. 🤔

The problem is, this seems funny but when you have older relatives who are not compos mentis they send their details or get upset and it's very hard to do anything about it remotely.

My 70yo relative calls me every time she gets a scam email so she can tell me proudly about how she spotted it and didn't give them any details. She used to write back with something funny/sarcastic but I told her that replying at all makes her more likely to be targeted again, so now she just laughs at them with me. It's cute.

OminousBirdAWing · 11/09/2024 13:03

I am always getting the email saying they've caught me on webcam doing unspeakable things to myself and that my friends and family will be sent a copy if I don't pay.

Frankly, even if it WERE true, I rather feel it's my friends and family who should cough up the money so they don't have to see it. After all, they are the one's who'll suffer the most 😂

NewGreenDuck · 11/09/2024 13:12

I wish they would hurry up and send me my ninja and the rest of the freebies. Perhaps they have lost my address?

I've seen those videos. I can't believe you were dancing around to Nickelback wearing socks AND sandals. Absolutely depraved.

OminousBirdAWing · 11/09/2024 13:18

Perhaps you should have contributed to the fund, then @MeowCatPleaseMeowBack - so you didn't have to see it! Grin

Ineedwinenow · 11/09/2024 13:22

I have a Russian beauty who regularly wants to have sex with me because I apparently have a big cock, I just need to subscribe to her porn channel and we can meet and have have video sex, think she’s gonna be disappointed that I don’t have a big cock but I do have a great personality, do you think it’s worth the subscription cost 😆

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 11/09/2024 13:30

I can claim £403,990 compensation for my injuries, must have been bloody serious as i can't remember a thing.

Hoppinggreen · 11/09/2024 13:33

Well my prostate is the size of a lemon apparently

Sanguinello · 11/09/2024 13:35

They probably think " 'In case of ignorance, your account will be terminated' means
"If you ignore this, your account will be terminated"

TickingAlongNicely · 11/09/2024 13:39

Apparently DH has recieved lots of parking fines and needs to follow a link to pay them.

Prescottdanni123 · 11/09/2024 13:54

All joking aside, they can make themselves sound terrifying if they want to. I got told I was suspected of fraud and if I didn't comply and provide my bank details they would send the police and I could be arrested. Got even angrier when I refused to do so until I looked into it. I hung up, checked the number online and it was a known scam number but I can see how some people get scared. The people who called me made it sound quite believable.

NewGreenDuck · 11/09/2024 10:55

Have you had the offer of 36 pieces of Tupperware though?

No! Now that sounds way better than my bloody Screwfix spanner offer... Hmm

AbitofaLad · 11/09/2024 14:24

Shame that the spanners don't exist. I would like those.

almondflake · 11/09/2024 14:30

I know we all laugh at these scammers but there still are people who fall for these .
Only yesterday my boss received a text message saying that he'd committed a driving offence and needed to follow the link in the message to pay the fine to the council , he was actually about to do this until we asked how the council had got his mobile number and where was the alleged offence committed ?
He couldn't believe how gullible he'd been especially as we took the piss out of him all afternoon Grin

Nubbled · 11/09/2024 14:37

I had a text from the “ Royal Male” saying I owed the £2.49 for a delivery 👀
I did wonder if it was the Nigerian Prince that used to email me constantly.

gardenmusic · 11/09/2024 15:36

Harry! Things cannot be that bad.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/09/2024 16:00

Within 3 days I had two virtually identical ‘we tried to deliver a large letter but you weren’t in’ - emails, one purporting to be from Royal Mail (very convincing page), the other supposedly from Evri.
I’m waiting for them to try a ‘maybe 3rd time lucky…’

gardenmusic · 11/09/2024 16:04

One of the most realistic ones that I have seen is a fake HMTaxes website.
It was given away by 350£, rather than £350, but I had just done my tax return - luckily I knew I had a bill to pay, rather than was due a refund.

DontBiteTheCat · 11/09/2024 16:06

Don’t worry OP.

I’m shortly coming into huge sums of money from a Nigerian Prince and I’m also due a tax rebate from the HMRC, they kindly sent me an email to tell me or I’d never have known. I’ve sent both the Prince and the HMRC my bank details so as soon as the money hits my account I’ll pay for your subscription.

gardenmusic · 11/09/2024 16:16

DontBiteTheCat

Thank you! Though Netflix seems a little stern for my liking.
