Has anyone had their bannister/spindles/ stair rail sent off to be dipped and stripped?

Moved in last year and there are decades of gloss on the banisters
I can't get it off.

Am I being thick though, how on earth do you remove it??

you could use a chemical paint stripper, e.g. Nitromors but it's very messy and time consuming @AbsolutelyRagingMad

You could also try a heat gun, also time consuming, good results though.

Something like this one

Not the spindles etc but we had our wooden front door stripped years ago. It was terrible- somehow the surface seemed furry!! We had to rub it down and stain it several times to get a decent surface.

I've already tried that. It's impossible, it's so thick. I have 4 kids in the house and the smell had them all complaining of headaches

Yes, we did and they came back completely stripped - we painted them white and they look like new now (Victorian house) Well worth the money

Could I ask how much it cost and was it a pain to remove them? And put them back?

yes, it is extremely noxious, understandably no good if you have children at home.

I think it cost a total of about £150 and it wasn’t too difficult to remove and replace them - my DH is a competent DIY er. This was a few years ago. The price was per spindle and they were away for about a week. It saved so much messy work It was a big twisting staircase - we did the banisters ourselves.
