Isn't it a powerchair? I can't see the details , there's loads and usually customisable

@Thistooshallpass24 Thistooshallpass24 thank you so much, I have spent ages trying to find this, when you start looking there are so many and the reviews vary 😕, and the prices wow. I'm trying to do research for a family member so they don't make a costly mistake. One thing that is important is weight, it's got to be some what manageable to get in the boot of a car.

The weight can vary massively, also the height of the seat, my scooter is fab but nearly 8 stone! And doesn't fold too much for travel. Are you able to visit a mobility shop? Their knowledge should be great and you can see things in action. In the last four years I've bought 9!!!! ( Mostly second hand, but still crazy) And sold on again as it's very hard to judge what will work for you. There's a big second hand market and scooters and chairs loose "value" quickly even when a year old.
Having a disability or needing extra help is such a learning curve, ( & bloody expensive) hope you get sorted out
There is a section on Mumsnet for mumsneters with disabilities so you may get better advice on that section although it's not a busy section of Mumsnet

babs353 · 25/09/2024 21:19

We had a family member hire one and it looked pretty snazzy, I think it was the first one on this website https://www.lendocare.com/products/wheelchairs

There are some really nice new ones coming out, I go with my sister to some of the trade shows these are displayed at, she goes because of work I go because i get bored😂

Thatwouldbeme · 26/09/2024 10:31

@babs353 thank you for the link, but it's too heavy for the family member to lift. We are a little further forward as I think we now know what they prefer in comfort but that seems to add to the weight 🙄, I seem to keep going back to this one mobility plus insta split, seems to have everything they want downside, you have to split it to get it in a car, but it seems easy enough to do. Also they like the igo lite carbon. @Thistooshallpass24 any knowledge of these 2 brands
Mobility plus insta split is the one I that splits
I go link

Must be a a chair not a scooter? I met a lovely lady with a great scooter the other day that weighed 17kg ( I think!) I can try to send you a link. I don't know a huge amount about powered chairs ( I use a scooter)

Edited

I wanted a really lightweight one and i went for this one (from a different supplier but they don't have any in stock) https://www.assurancemobility.co.uk/product/lightweight-airfold-folding-power-wheelchair/

Weight was my key priority though as I wanted my teens to be able to lift out of the boot so we could do trips out. I have bought an extra cushion to make the seat comfortable. It works well on pavements, indoors and on firm short grass areas.

Thistooshallpass24 · 26/09/2024 10:49

@Thatwouldbeme how heavy is the user? I forgot that's important there's weight limits for usage

Thatwouldbeme · 26/09/2024 11:38

@Thistooshallpass24 yes a chair, I think as sometimes needed indoors, he's not to heavy. @CassandraWebb thank you for the link I have looked at those, but they sat on the quickie brand which I think is something similar in spec and then another brand which had suspension and numatic tyres and found that more comfortable so it went back to square one. I can only look at spec and price, they have to find it comfortable.

Thistooshallpass24 · 26/09/2024 11:54

@Thatwouldbeme it's so complicated isn't it, can someone like age UK or older citizens advisory, give you any help with information then you don't feel like you're being sold a product (iyswim) I agree about varying levels of comfort, some are like sitting on bricks ( regardless of price) my scooter has inflated tires and when the need replacing it should be £60 a pop!!!! (Through the official merchant)

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 26/09/2024 11:56

I saw someone the other day who had a hoist in a roof box to get it in and out of the car. Bet that was expensive but what a great idea.

Thatwouldbeme · 26/09/2024 12:00

@Thistooshallpass24 i could get them to ask, one of the problems is they want light weight but big and sturdy and comfortable but realistically I don't think that's out there. The nearest I can find is the mobility plus one but I really don't know enough to say yes this is the one. I really didn't know what was involved in choosing a wheelchair but I'm getting educated 😏

I kinda "adopted" an older lady a few years ago and took her shopping every week, sorted out dentist hospital etc, her own son lived about two miles away and didn't seem bothered, I even had to recommend a a funeral home ( when the time came) as he "hadn't really thought about it" she was in her 90s ( him 60/70s) I was in my 30s
I'd started looking into scooters for her as a way of independence and it was just baffling. When I needed one, I found it so difficult because they are so many versions, price points etc also I hadn't realised how low you sit ( elbow in the face height on some) some tech had moved on lots hadn't. The mobility shops all want a sale and it's a niche market with a huge mark up

TenarAtuan · 26/09/2024 12:24

Check second hand as well.
Currently trying to sell a folding mobility scooter that was sadly never used, for a small sum compared to new and haven't heard a peep!

DreamHolidays · 26/09/2024 12:36

I bought this one
https://www.eezeego.co.uk/product/eezeego-lw1/

Im happy with it. It copes well with curbs, rough grounds etc… Never had an issue and the guy running the shop/manufacture is extremely helpful.
It’s 25kg, which I manage in and out of the car. Your relative might want to investigate a hoist too.

Now one of the reason I chose that one is because you can rent it first which means you can try it and see if it works for you. Fir me that was a huge plus both to test of an electric wheelchair was right for me and if that one was right iyswim

Thistooshallpass24 · 26/09/2024 12:37

@TenarAtuan I said the same, the loss of "value" in mobility aids is huge. Sorry for your loss
@Thatwouldbeme without wanting to give you some more work, have you looked into motability scheme ( cars better suited to wheelchairs/scooters)

DreamHolidays · 26/09/2024 12:39

A hoist is around £1500~2000

But if your relative gets PIP and has a notability car, it’s around £500
Biggest issue is the car itself tbh (you need enough room in the boot and in height to be able to install one of them

Oh gosh yes, comfort is key. For me weight overrode all the other considerations but my condition fluctuates wildly so I don't need a chair all the time or I would have had other priorities.

Thatwouldbeme · 26/09/2024 14:26

Thank you @babs353 @CassandraWebb @DreamHolidays @SnowflakeSmasher86 today I have told them I think the mobility plus insta split gives them what they have asked for minus they have to split it. Weight is very important it has to be under 20kg. if I'm honest, I think much lower which then you loose all the extra comfort things. Now it's up to them, if they go for that or the I go lite carbon. But I will come back and let you know which one and how it performs 😁, it may be helpful to someone in the future

Yes do! It's so hard to figure out the right option

When we tested lifting them we found there was a real difference between the 17ish Kg ones and the 23ish.kg ones.

But equally if you were mainly using it to go from home/have a hoist in the car then weight wouldnt he relevant at all.

It's good there is such a range of options now though

Thatwouldbeme · 26/09/2024 15:23

@CassandraWebb they did think of a hoist but it really would only be beneficial for there car, not for if they get lifts to hospitals and things so didn't go down that route. Yes plenty choice which is good. Just need to nail down your needs as I suppose everyone is different

Yes that.was my thinking re a hoist. And also that I didn't want to get a bigger car as I love my tiny picanto!

DreamHolidays · 26/09/2024 17:49

Before ordering I’d check that they still have two weeks to try it out
They might want to check
that the assembly of the two parts is easy enough. And that the chair is comfortable enough.

They are an expensive to make!
