I’ve seen bath and Winchester are supposed to be good. Anyone been to either?

Exeter mentioned several times - you’ll enjoy it if your idea of a Christmas market is the same greasy stinky food stalls on repeat and on and on and…

Chatsworth. The house is usually worth a look too but the market is mostly local produce and makers. Refreshing!

If you go to chatsworth Christmas market I'd recommend staying in nearby Matlock or Matlock Bath;Matlock Bath is certainly worth including in the visit;it's a charming little place .

We stayed here www.hodgkinsons-hotel.co.uk/

I used to love a Christmas market but they're all the same now. The stalls all seem to be the same, I assume it's more of a franchise thing these days and there are only actually 20 stalls which are repeated.

I think just pick a city with Christmassy architecture - to British people that usually means lots of Victorian buildings or anything that evokes Dickens Christmas carol. Pick a freezing cold weekday and plan to sightsee and browse the stalls.

Came on to say this, they are literally a replica across every market, and usually have weird crap that I suspect is money laundering no one buys. The stalls in my local one are identical every year, and they are even in the same position, so if you went in 2012 it still hasn't changed!

A couple of years ago we started chatting to a German stall holder who sold the little candles for the pyramids and it was a year we couldn't go back home.

She said she wouldn't come again, their costs are skyhigh and they can't price their goods high enough to break even.
She also said that she found people may look at traditional German decorations but don't really buy them as their taste to decorate trees is different.
She sold traditional Ore Mountain (Erzgebirge) wooden decorations, the things are lovely but really expensive anyway.

Then came Brexit and there weren't any German stall holders anymore as it got even more expensive and complicated.

So most "German" markets won't really have a lot of real German stalls nowadays.

Not a market, but I love the Xmas event at Waddesdon Manor in Bucks. Stalls in huts, great light show and trail. Books up early.

Waddesdon is great, the house is decorated beautifully, the light trail and show is good, and there's plenty to do away from the market, they sell the best mince pies there too.

If you're taking children, pay for the bus or premium parking- it's a long walk back to the carpark if you've got a tired and grumpy husband carrying the bags child.

@CoffeandTiaMaria if I were you I would head to Vienna or one of the German markets, they’re infinitely more interesting and Christmassy

Which German one would you recommend?

Cologne had quite a few different themed ones and it was a brilliant trip

Another vote for Chatsworth. It's not just the market itself but the House, the grounds, and a little further out they have a great farm shop too.

I'd avoid it on the weekends if at all possible, and pre-book your car parking because they will turn you away if they're full. They provide buses and golf buggies to transport people from the outer car parks to the market but it's a lovely walk on a dry day.

We loved Dusselldorf and their Christmas market. Close together and a lovely city itself

Late notice but in Hebden Bridge and their local artists market has been on today and is in tomorrow. Fantastic, so much better than other Christmas markets, beautiful handmade stuff and some decent prices too.

AyrshireTryer · 30/11/2024 19:10

I've been to both and Bath was better.

Winter Wonderland is complete shite.
Save yourself!

Chatsworth, really atmospheric last week in the snow. Not for bargain hunters, but lots of nice quality items. Plenty of cheese and gin, pastries, jewellery, woollen things, and various novelties. Parking is £25 and needs pre booking.
You could stay in nearby Bakewell, and their regular market is quite good, on Mondays. Then visit Matlock, or Carsington Water, go walking in the Peak district or hire a bike and do the Monsall Trail. Plenty to do for a few days.

Surely it matters where you live, you could fly a day trip cheaper than driving some places suggested on here if you are needing to get there be it car + parking or train
Also sorry for linking Chatsworth again I had missed it up thread

I went to Bath last year. We made the mistake of going on a Saturday and it was heaving as you would expect.

We normally use the Park & Ride in Bath but even that was rammed when we went to the Christmas Market.

The stalls were overpriced and one was selling ornaments almost identical to ones I'd bought in Lidl in previous years. I wouldn't rush back

We enjoyed it in previous years but went last weekend and it was nowhere near as good, lots less stalls and so many food ones, rather than gifts. It was also impossible to park anywhere, and heaving with people. We've gone in the week before and won't make the mistake of a Saturday again!
